By popular demand, NASCAR has added an untelevised qualifying race for those not initially invited to this Sunday's Richmond iRace. Top two finishers will transfer to the main, plus two drivers of FOX's choice, to make it a 30-car field.

With this much crashing going on, it'd been really good if iRacing's fancy new damage model that has been previewed for over a year now was working by now, with debris and a tyre or two flying around.

The crashes look like lumps of jello coming together. Just compare it to Wreckfest's incredible deformations, track and car debris littered everywhere that you can hit.

The new damage model is present in the RS3, Cayman, GT1/GT2 cars, and the ARCA car (previously the K&N National car), as well as Skip Barber and F3.

It's miles better than the old model. Crashes look and feel realistic now. It does need some work, however, since I've seen cases of cars just coming together in awkward fashion, as shown here

I hope they get it on the Cup cars ASAP because of the increased exposure on Fox. Now is the time to shine, and a lot of NASCAR fans enjoy watching spectacular crashes.

Just imagine:

Wreckfest + Cup drivers + Talladega = The Return of Dega Fever.

Fuck yeah. Run that Wreckfest 1990 NASCAR mod at the super janky Talladega that someone built for that game.
