Ugh.

Just remember that the yellow line screw jobs eventually lead to Carl Edwards into Dega's catch fence and Kyle Busch getting turned by Stewart in the July Daytona race. Guys finally called NASCAR's bluff. If you're going to call bullshit penalties for avoiding wrecks and trying to race clean, then fuck it. Let's wad up the field and collect the trophy.

Wasn't the yellow line rule a knee-jerk reaction to Dale Earnhardt's death? Not that that was the issue in that wreck, but the Dega race after Dale's death went caution-free, and the yellow line rule was in effect at Daytona in July (just ask Tony Stewart), so I don't see what else could have prompted the rule.

It has caused more big wrecks and various BS than it has prevented.

It was, though going beneath the line had nothing to do with Earnhardt's death. More NASCAR nonsense logic.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I wasn't 100% clear on that.

The ONLY time I remember an accident being caused by going under the yellow line was the last lap of the '97 Pepsi 400, nothing else I can recall justifies this rule. I remember them contemplating eliminating the rule a few years ago, but the drivers voted to keep it in place. Sadly I think drivers today would cause wrecks cause very few raced in the pre-yellow line rule age.

I believe this wreck had something to do with it

The only other one I remember is this:

I still think the yellow line rule is awful. If they want to drive like idiots and wreck each other by going way way way too far down the track, let them. They'll learn quickly enough not to do that unless it actually is beneficial.

I agree, it should be self policing, atleast at the Cup level.

There should probably be something in the turns but on the straights it should to be up to the drivers discretion

Which would also help when they're lapping slower cars too

I seem to recall something about the 2001 Dega Busch race being the cause of the yellow line rule.

"Jimmy Spencer never forgets" came out of that race, and partially because of those rules.

Jeff Gordon made what ultimately turned out to be the winning pass nearly in the grass at the 500 in '99.

But if Rusty Wallace had kept him down there, Jeff would have LePage'd right into the back of Ricky Rudd's slow car.

Most people forget Rusty pulled the same move in the same spot in '98 (with fewer laps to go, even), and Jeff backed off. Jeff just wasn't having any of Rusty's shit that day. haha

That 1999 pass was intense. Even watching a replay of it all these years later, you still feel a little anxious whether it's going to work or be a gigantic crash.

It should be all tracks or no tracks. If you define the safety apron, leave it as that. No cutting the tri ovals at vegas/joliet/kansas, no cutting the dog leg at phoenix. It's all or nothing. Picking on daytona and talladega only is dumb.

I hated seeing Gordon pass Rusty in that race. As a life long Rusty fan, that was his best shot at the 500. He led so much of that race. I the not pitting killed him. Though I was very impressed how much power he had by staying with the leaders when they split him 3 wide and he had no help. I remember that day thinking hey, Dale last year, Rusty this year. Damn Gordon.

My wife - who can't stand racing, despite my best efforts - sees that happening at Phoenix, Vegas, Kansas, etc, and always says "those guys are cheating". It's a simple way of looking at it, but yeah, it doesn't exactly upset the car *that* much to go down there. I find myself not really being able to argue with her on that one.

Yep. Either enforce the track limits or don't.

Really? I thought they put an intern on a blindfold and tell him to throw a dart at a target without peeking.
