Can someone sum up in a sentence to a newb who's not paying attention what is wrong the qualifying?

I've no idea and the last few pages have made me intrigued.

Tomorrow is not gonna be Terry's last race......I got a feeling his car is gonna get redecaled into the 17. I think the one eyed bandit will pay it forward and field a car for him in the 2015 Daytona 500 as a thank you.

Yeah, that kind of borders on flamebait. Just saying.

Sorenson ran 189mph. I bet Tommy Baldwin is gonna be livid. This is his teams best place to prosper.

Depends who would be in 36th if someone managed to bump there way up. (Josh Wise was 36th so it likely would have stayed the same.)

NASCAR tried to make a set of rules to prevent teams from using strategy exclusively to get good lap times, but instead it backfired and just made things worse.

Group qualifying, so basically everyone wanted to be as close to the back of the pack as possible. Over half of each session was spent playing chicken on pit road because no one wanted to leave first. Then they'd crawl around the apron for a while waiting for the last possible moment to floor it. Some drivers misjudged it and didn't even manage to get a lap in.

Basically, group qualifying doesn't work on plate tracks.

This ultimately falls on the teams, but from what I've read in here, NASCAR really screwed the pooch.

See, I would have told the teams they had 20 seconds to leave pit road. They get one warmup lap, and then they fly. If they decide to coast to get someone past them, their laps are disallowed.

Still safer than 46 cars with some coasting, some liftiing and some at full speed. The cat and mouse thing happens with whatever size is the group, what you can do is give less time.

No it 100% falls on the teams. You know the rules. Teams got too cute. NASCAR gave all teams ample time to put in their fastest lap. When it boils down, the 17's shitty performance all year has come back to bite them.

Nemechek is out, Sorenson is in.

The 29 car flunked inspection - "oil tank encasement improperly sealed."

Marty Smith said on Twitter that Stenhouse won't be buying his way into the field tomorrow.

Anyone needing a visual depiction of the current state of Nascar just needs to watch that qualifying session, it was literally a theatrical metaphor.
