I know they've always talked about taking out the first rows of grandstands when someone says the cars should run unrestricted at the plate tracks, but honestly, it doesn't sound like a bad idea now. Have the first 25-30 feet be "no-man's land" or something, so we don't have to deal with this any more. You can't remove all the danger from motorsports, but you can sure as hell do quite a bit.

And to think when I was at the 2003 Daytona 500 practice I was standing right on the fence as a pack went by.

I really hate to see that happen, was a good race overall, but you really cannot expect to have a 3200lb car traveling at what was likely at the time still over 100mph being stopped by the fence completely. I just really hope that nobody was really hurt in all of this. Tony put it best, the drivers choose to put themselves in risky situations. But its never good when the fans end up there too.

judging from that last pic, you would have to say spectators on the bottom got away with the scare. Seems like the people further up are the ones hurt.

Idea on how to prevent this: put the finish line before the tri-oval. Straights equals less risks. No?
