And Mikey is arguing the case for standardised parts on Twitter.

It is interesting to observe the paradox (both in NASCAR and F1 primarily) where the rulebook is bound so tight that the cars are virtually stock anyway, in the hope of saving money, but the consequence is that all the teams with money to spend spend even more to maximize the minute improvements in performance that can be had, and everyone else either struggles to hang on or falls down and dies.

I wonder when this Rubicon will be crossed, and which series will do it first.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

I just can't believe in the falling fortunes of the shitty last 10 years of the sport they still managed to increase the cost to compete by $10m.

The 2 million for a competitive Cup team in 1990 would put you in a Venturini ride in ARCA these days. That's how far it's gone.

the problem isn't exactly the 35 million.

it's the fact companies are getting 36 million return on their investment or worse out of the original 35mil or so they put in. If they were getting 70million back on their investment then it would worth the costs.

Maybe if the racing could improve and the ratings would go up, it would give it a shot in the arm it needs, but that won't fix the entire issue

I think cutting costs needs to come before any talk of increased ratings or attendance, two things I am really not optimistic about drastically improving even if the sport were to be drastically improved in short order. I mean ideally you'd do all of these things but I'm saying even if they did a lot to correct mistakes of the past, get things going in the right direction, etc. I don't think it's undo the damage already done. The emphasis has to be on cost cutting.

I hope that what happened with the #78 team serves as a wake-up call to the higher-ups at NASCAR that something has to change and change fast because the costs have gotten out of control and it's driving away a lot of large sponsors because NASCAR sponsorship isn't yielding the same return on their investment that it once was. The question is, are the people in charge of NASCAR smart enough to realize that? Judging by some of their decisions, I have my doubts. Something has to be done to get the costs in control.

If I'm correct, NASCAR asked for a minimum $100 million for title sponsorship for the Cup Series. They couldn't even get half that.

If that wasn't a wake-up call, I don't know what is.

I wonder if cutting the Monster Energy Cup schedule by 5 to 10 races would help with cutting costs.

Their season (36 races) is always longer than those of the four major stick & ball sports (NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL) as well as Xfinity (33 races) and the Trucks (23 races).

Races can't be cut from the schedules as the tracks would sue, even after the contract agreements run out.

I'm not sure if there's any saving to be done at this point, as there's always something that would stand in the way of a positive change for all involved.

I can definitely see them running on those giant, near-identical racetracks all across the country with a field of 14 cars.

20% of that I think. Asked for $100 Million, got a 2 year deal for $20 Million a season with an option... Now they're on the hunt again as Monster is most likely done at the end of next year.

Too bad tobacco companies can't spend any of their damn near limitless piles of money on motorsports anymore.

Don't forget JGR upped the costs of the alliance this year too.

I think what also hurts is the lack of personality the series has now. Part of the reason NASCAR began its initial surge in mainstream popularity in the mid-to-late 90's was because the drivers, teams, and fans oozed with such a "Southern-fried" character that it became a curiosity to outsiders. That brought viewers and sponsors in and hooked them once they saw all the good NASCAR had to offer beyond that.

Nowadays the most personality anyone can muster is "Whiny Bitch" (Kyle), "Whiny Bitch's Brother" (Kurt), and "Guy Who Looks Like Butt-Head from Beavis & Butt-Head" (Brad). Drivers who used to valiantly speak out against NASCAR's bullshit have been silenced over the years, and what little personality might shine through is rarely seen and isn't enough to be noticed. The rest, of course, have long since retired. In a perfect world, Chase Elliott should've been as much of a slow-talking Southern boy as his father, but he's as much of a cookie-cutter as everyone else is. Fact is, I can't get hooked on a particular driver after Dale Jr's retirement simply because they have nothing else to offer, no "it" factor that can make fans gravitate towards that person.

Kahne not racing this weekend due to heat exhaustion at Darlington & other health issues. Unclear if he will be out for the rest of his final season.

Does sound serious if he's been having it since last year.

Shouldn't have finished the race if he was struggling to keep his eyes open!
