What the fuck? I heard Daley Thompson say "nah fuck those other niggers" about 35 years ago too when someone asked him if he was bringing his hangers on to the bar after the race, can I get him sacked from whatever unrelated job he does now? and get his kids sacked from their job too while we're at it?

Seriously this is nuts, so it's generally accepted to be OK for a five year old to scream at his mother in the middle of the supermarket that she is a cruel fucking c**t for not buying him a can of red bull or coke or packet of sweets, but it's neither acceptable for her to punish him or for an old man to utter a naughty word 35 years ago during a time that the word itself was actually fairly common and accepted in it's use?

Stop the world, I want to get off.

SMI still trying to work with Formosa and the city of Nashville to co-promote a NASCAR top-3 series race at the track in the future.
https://autoweek.com/article/nascar/nas ... way-nascar

IRP is undergoing a multi-phase renovation in hopes to reopen the tracks road course & to get the asphalt oval up to code for a NASCAR top-3 series event
https://autoweek.com/article/nascar/luc ... car-return

Rockingham Speedway has been purchased by Dan Lovenheim, plans haven't been mentioned for the track but they are "remarkably encompassing."
https://autoweek.com/article/nascar/nor ... scar-track

-

I could see Nashville happening as that wouldn't be hard for SMI to move one of the dates from Vegas or Texas, but unless the NHRA co-promotes IRP with ISC, IMS or SMI I doubt they (or any other track outside of ISC, NASCAR or SMI ownership) would ever get a date in the new contract.

If they do want to keep Rockingham as a motorsports venue, I do hope that the new owners try to work with the dragstrip across the street to try & make it into a general motorsports complex (at least for the grassroots). Little Rock only needs walls, catchfencing & grandstands to get in shape for weekly asphalt racing, and there's enough land to build another venue too (i.e. road course, motocross, dirt oval etc.).

I think the key for survival for a big oval track in this day & age is to have the venue as a general motorsports complex, where it can be used for all forms of racing (either it be road racing, drag racing, parking lots that are big enough for autocross & drifting, asphalt or dirt short tracks, off-road / moto-x etc.). Most of the new & reopening track projects presently are done in this time for format with either road courses or short tracks / dragstrips, and projects like Gateway, Kern County & PPIR that feature larger asphalt ovals shows it can be successful in those terms, either for major leagues or grassroots.

While the entire plan for Rockingham hasn't been announced, Lovenheim will be renovating the track.

Rockingham / Rock Entertainment Complex has launched their website, and according to the Richmond County Daily Journal - the complex will be used for racing.

The defending Cup champs and one of the big three couldn't even get sponsorship for next year.

This is not OK.

So, my question is... will we have races next year where not even 36 cars start?

Atlanta had 36. I can definitely see even less next year.

8 full grids out of the 25 races so far this year...

They'll reduce field size to 33 so it doesn't look bad.

Heard some rumblings about this last week. Those same rumors said Truex to the 19 and Suarez to the 95.

Do they already have a driver lined up for the 41 or is SHR cutting back to three teams?

When a 7 time champ is struggling to find a sponsor. You know it's bad

What's a competitive Cup team cost to run these days? $35 million a season? Awful lot of money to spend with no guarantee that you'll get a shot to run for a title. With Furniture Row the gamble is smaller of course because they're a top flight team, but as was said, when even your defending champion can't get a sponsor, something's very wrong.

I wonder... Does the sports lack of diversity and the former chairman's shenanigans with the law influence companies decisions to back the teams in the sport? I could see companies sitting in the boardroom wondering how their brand would be perceived if associated with such an outfit as NASCAR and deciding that their dollars are better spent elsewhere.

Low ratings, no diversity, former leader in law trouble, empty stands, high cost... Not usually a recipe for success.

And that right there is why teams have to scrounge multiple sponsors around. I think Denny is the only one that has a full-season sponsor for next season, but how long will that last? How much money is FedEx spending on Denny Hamlin's 11 car? Will they continue to spend that much for much longer, or will they decide their return on investment just isn't there like in years past? At the very least, a full season has increased in price over the years.

Nascarman on Racing Reference did a real good deep-dive into the rising costs of NASCAR over the years back in 2016.
https://www.racing-reference.info/showblog?id=2744

Check out some of the numbers in that article, I think it really shows how costs have increased.
1982: $750,000 - $1,000,000 ($1,997,933.40 - $2,663,911.21 in 2018 dollars)
1990: $2,000,000 ($3,937,593.75 in 2018 dollars)
1996: $7,500,000 ($12,201,710.78 in 2018 dollars)
2001: $16,000,000 ($22,780,203.39 in 2018 dollars)
2008: $25,000,000 ($29,261,784.55 in 2018 dollars)
2016: $35,000,000

If I'm a major company, I have a very hard time wanting to spend around $35 million in putting my logo on a car for a racing series that is in obvious decline. The stands are empty, TV ratings are still hitting lows and fan interest isn't there. If I'm a major company, that sounds like a real bad way to waste a large amount of money that could be better spent elsewhere.

What's the exposure worth? If I'm a sponsor of a car, I'd undoubtedly want to see it on television, but does it appear? Are enough people watching? No wonder Target left, or Dollar General, Home Depot, UPS, Chrysler, Sprint or god knows how many other companies. It's just a real unwise way to spend money. For example, Target decided their advertising dollars were better spent in the MLS. In some cities, such as Atlanta, the MLS is going the other way from NASCAR as far as growth. Atlanta United averages 50,000 fans per game, which could be more than NASCAR can say. People all over Atlanta tune in to watch Atlanta United play. Bars and restaurants play their games on televisions, which is more than can be said about NASCAR these days.

The fact is, NASCAR probably represents a real poor return on investment nowadays.

Jim Utter on Twitter saying that Truex, Pearn and Bass Pro Shops will form a package at JGR. Which will presumably leave Suarez in the cold (unless Hamlin calls it a day early).

EDIT: And a story. https://www.motorsport.com/nascar-cup/n ... 9/3171316/
