I wouldn't be nearly as upset if NASCAR hadn't clearly stated that anything goes on the last lap.

That is the core issue. If there hadn't been any clarification, then both sides of the argument would be equal, but because NASCAR did say 'anything goes' after the 2007 Daytona CTS race and allegedly repeated that message in the drivers' briefing yesterday...it just stinks.

Watching the drag to the line on YouTube, it does look like they make gentle contact which forces Smith down, but I'm not entirely sure of that.

But all publicity is good publicity

I keep trying to come up with an idea that would work better than the yellow line rule.. but I can't think of any. The only real option to prevent having to make judgment calls would be to eliminate it completely.. but they'd never do that.

Maybe only have a "yellow line" on the backstretch where it can really affect things.

Remove any yellow line rule from the Tri-oval area.

BTW, congratulations to Regan Smith on winning his first race. It was a a hell of a pass.

there should be no yellow line rule once they get in the tri-oval on the final lap because there aren't any corners after that. well there is, but you can slow it down if you're on the apron and who really cares if they wreck after the checkers. the whole reason they started that rule was because people were going way below the line on the straights and then once they got to the corners they would try and rejoin the track and fly up the banking and into the pack and cause a huge crash. that factor doesn't matter once they get to the tri-oval.

I like the idea of having the grass extend all the way to the point where the yellow line is, or atleast a 1 yard wide strip of grass where there's asphalt runoff, something that will make whoever goes on or beyond it truly shit themselves. It just makes too much sense.

yeah this would just create more crashes.

yeah this would just create more crashes.

It would also provide a much stronger deterrent against going there in the first place.

what about people who have legitimate reasons for going down on the apron below the yellow line, like people with blown engines and flat tires?

Instant debris caution, NASCAR would love it for that reason alone.

No it isn't, it's bullshit like this that makes people angry at and turn away from NASCAR. It's not a good thing.

I bet that every time there's a controversial decision in motor racing, for every 1 person that stops watching, another 2 start. Or a similar ration. Otherwise they wouldn't make so many controversial decisions

You see it in F1 all the time. The amount of people stopping watching because they're fed up with the FIA is far less than the number of people starting to watch

NASCAR won't look bad, because nothing will happen to them. Nobody will say anything.

This is what makes it the worst.

If this was the NFL the media would be all over it. If this was the MLB the media would be all over it.

But, since this is NASCAR, the media is just like LOL NASCAR and blow it off. If there's one thing that pisses me off most, its the fact that NASCAR made one of the worst calls in the modern era and people will just be like WELL IONO NASCAR SAID ITS NOT FAIR SO YA FUCK REGAN and not one person would give a shit about it.

You know what the fucked up call has done? It's got people off Goodyears back for all the tyre failures, especially the fact one of them put Hamlin in hospital. Hmm :whistling:

Reading on Jayski's site, it seems as if NASCAR are denying that any last-lap concession was ever made in the drivers' briefing, and that the rule in future will be as it was on Sunday.

-------------

Hamlin was released from hospital earlier on today, he appears to be fine.

They'll say that until Jr or another top driver does it.

It's gonna be awesome when Jimmie Johnson (or other top tier driver) passes somebody like Smith (lower tier driver) on the last lap of the Daytona 500 by using the tri-oval apron and NASCAR just says "LOL ITS ALL IN GOOD RACING! ANYTHING GOES ON THE LAST LAP, RIGHT?" Hell, they'd probably penalize the other driver just for forcing the top guy onto the apron...
