I love Jimmie Johnson and hope he wins at least 100 races and 8 championships. We need that next record breaker. Just like 5 in a row.

So is it too much of an overreaction to say that the Cup title now means nothing now?

Why wasn't Brian France drowned at birth?

It certainly means significantly less than a championship won over the course of even 10 races.

I want to go egg NASCAR headquarters.

I can't wait until we are all really old (and still here because our lives are awesome) and we look back at this day and just laugh.

Joe A, you're not overreacting at all. This really grinds my gears. For seasons we have all seen the sport become less legitimate but this is the cherry on the cake. HOW can you compare a champion under this system to an Earnhardt, Petty or any full season champ?

Ugh... well, I'll reserve final judgement about how exciting it is until I actually see it unfold, but I agree with what's been said above - it fudges the meaning of today's Champions vs. Champions under the old systems. Heck, even Chase winners could be way more deserving than title winners under this format.

Whatever... I'll keep watching. *shrugs*

I'll still watch but the official NASCAR champion is meaningless now. I'll just count who scored the most points over the season as champion.

The only way this is legit is if they reset every current drivers stats back to zero like when the BGN series was established.

ah this doesn't really bother me.

Post subject:  Re: Random NASCAR Discussion

Now now.. you can't really compare eras anyways. The points system for the majority of Petty's championships was way different, short fields, 40-60+ races per season, etc. The stuff is always evolving. A champion is someone who excels based on the rules presented and finishes first out of others competing in the same rules. Therefore all of the champions are legit, no matter the format.

Welp, Nascar is steadily becoming more pointless.

This little nugget was nice..
Quote:
A win by a championship-eligible driver in any Chase race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next Chase round
So any of the eight drivers in contention can win Texas, Martinsville, or Phoenix, and start and park the other races, and they are locked in the top 4. Also the qualifications.. A win, top 30 in points, and attempt any race.. to qualify in the top 16 is nice. They really are trying to reward you for winning. Win a race and just ride the rest until the chase. Maybe it means they will race harder or gamble on pit strategy, anything just to win one race to make the chase. Then of course when that starts it's all about winning.

Who is gonna be the first to go back and redo all the old results to see how the outcomes would change under this format?

I'll still watch, but now I will just tune in for the big races and whenever I feel like it.

Calling NASCAR the WWE of auto racing is even more of an insult to the WWE. Knock on it for being fake all you want, at least they still put effort into the work. NASCAR still hasn't found out that the constant changes harm the sport more than good.

Post subject:  Re: Random NASCAR Discussion

At the end of the day, drivers who have crappy runs in the first few races of the Chase usually drop out of title contention anyway. Very rarely does a driver start the Chase like crap and go on to win the thing (aside from Johnson in '06). So really, this is just a way of weeding those other guys out "officially" and generating buzz and excitement.

But yeah, what de31168 said - the way the cars are, and the way the drivers are today are nothing like they were back in the Petty days, Earnhardt\Waltrip days, etc. Much like Vettel and Red Bull are going to go on to break many F1 records (I'm sure they will), you can't compare those achievements to Fangio's, Piquet's, Senna's, Schumacher's, etc.

It's just the way it is. With lots of things in life, actually.

Come November, I'll probably be on the edge of my seat, as always. :flag:

If one were to focus solely on decisions and actions, one would come to the unavoidable conclusion that there's nothing that NASCAR hates more than NASCAR fans.
