I don't like that NASCAR did it, but since it's Denny I don't care as much as I should.

NASCAR: where you can get fined for telling the truth and the fans are ok with it.

Who says its the truth? An opinion doesn't equate to truth.

Based on the race in progress, it's not, but back when he said it, he was asked for his opinion on the new car, he gave his honest opinion, he got fined for it.
That's what annoys me really.....

Knowing NASCAR and how media friendly it wants to appear, if he'd have refused the interview because he didn't want to hurt its image he'd likely have also been in trouble for not being open with the media so he was really stuck in a rock or a hard place.
Do the interview, tell the truth, get in trouble. Deny the interview, get in trouble.
Do the interview and lie about your feelings, no trouble but probably feel grubby as hell.

NASCAR should just send the crew chiefs the interview scripts at the end of the race and the drivers can be told what they're expected to say over the radio before they get out of the cars.

The analogy of criticising your employer doesn't hold, unless your job involves being watched by millions who want to see your personality and fighting instincts. Nobody would tune into a sport where competitors just say nice things or nothing at all.

This is like competitors on Big Brother (sorry for bringing it into this) being kicked off for complaining about the cameras and other show silliness. Maybe that's how that show works too, but if the whole point is entertainment then I don't see how that would be smart for them either.

At the end of the day, NASCAR is a product. Any time the quality of the product is unfairly brought into question, they have to call their drivers on it. Phoenix was the first real test for the new car - it's a track that isn't easy to pass at to begin with, and Denny didn't hesitate to question all the work that had been done so far with the car.

You know, those millions of dollars put into it at that point? Those millions that who knows how many people wouldn't have liked hearing were a complete waste so far? After one single race?

It might have been an opinion, but it was a throwaway comment that hurt more than people realize. Of course, people aren't going to see it that way, thanks to NASCAR's inconsistency in dealing with this sort of thing. But from a business stand point, I agree with the fine.

Did you drive the car in Phoenix? No, but Hamlin did. The car put on a bad show in the first two races and he was frustrated. He vented and there was nothing wrong with that. It hurt no one, there was nothing wrong with Hamlin speaking his mind.

Would be a bit like saying you're fanboying and banning you a day for it :p

Well, just to straighten something out... although I do see WHY NASCAR would fine him, I don't necessarily agree that fining a driver for an opinion is a good thing for anyone.

Unfortunately, the way Denny has handled the situation so far is completely unlike anyone else who has gotten similar fines. I believe Keselowski got a "secret" fine for saying something similar in 2011 or so, and I think someone else did, as well. It wasn't necessarily fair when it happened then, but it never kept me from supporting Keselowski, just because of the way it was handled.

Denny's reaction was like a childish tantrum, and that hasn't helped my opinion of the matter all that much.

I blame Denny. :)

I saw the Nationwide Entry list for Bristol and ARCA Champion Chris Buescher is scheduled to make his Nationwide debut in the #16 Ford Ecoboost Ford for Roush-Fenway Racing. Jon Wes Townley is also entered in the #25 Zaxby's Toyota for Venturini Motorsports.

Chris Buescher made 2 Nationwide starts in 2011 after Bayne's illness.

The thing is, the drivers and their personalities are also the product. By fining them for having an opinion and sending the message that opinions that differ from NASCAR aren't allowed, they're harming that product.

Kind of a damned either way deal for NASCAR though.

Well there's one way to guarantee a few cautions at Bristol...

This was posted on FAS Lane Racing's Facebook page.

Quote:
Been quiet working on good things. Looks like we have a commitment for a full time sponsor, with a three year deal. This week we are working on a plan to really improve our program. Be patient with us, we are trying nd there is no lack of effort by anyone. Don't give up on us!

That is great news for one of the sports small-budget team to possibly be getting the stability of a full-time sponsor. It's obvious that Frankie Stoddard has put a lot into his team and hopefully this sponsorship will take them to the next level.

We shall see about this full time 3 year sponsorship.

Check up front I hope.

Out of interest, is Mark Martin running full time this season? It would be nice to see him in The Chase one more time.

Let's hope it's not a Big Daddy's BBQ\Junie Donlavey type of situation, where the sponsor says they'll pay, then they don't.

Or, at least I think that's what happened with that situation back in '99, or whatever.
