Here's a lap from this year to the Österreichring:

They had done up the borders with kerbs and astro replacing grass. Also the last two corners have hardly any astro left.

How long did it take from the first start to the third start, including red-flags?

Don't know exactly, but sources say over 2 hours. I wonder what are the longest breaks before the restart?
Spa 1998 took an hour, just like Silverstone 2014.

Yep. A track <60 seconds would be great. Great for the spectators for sure.

You know, they should run at Avus some year just for laughs. I'm pretty sure the gaps would be very close and with DRS nobody would be able to get away from the pack

They could just go down to the Zeltweg airfield and race there. If they managed to do sub 70 second laps in the early 60's, imagine nowadays.

It's possible that se go under 67 second pole this year. They've repaved and smoothened the track from last year. DTM guys improved over 2,5s so all time quickest pole lap is in the reach. That's Mansell 1991 at Silverstone with 1:07,4.

Also, let's remember that the 2016 season has seen pole laps much faster than in 2015, so if it doesn't rain, we will see a pretty large improvement for everybody there!

I love those unprotected embankements next to the track, an anachronism even by late 80s standards.

And of course:

Canada was different, there wasn't start mayhem and they were already using modern standarts (SC start)

but in 1982 race took a long while before the start due to Paletti crash

Not sure, but Monza 1978 the restart after start crash (which eventually claimed Ronnie Peterson's life) took long enough that the new race was shortened to 40 laps. Basically just long enough to award full points.

For heavens sake no, someone might end up with dust on their tyres, causing an outburst about the lack of track safety by Rosberg, Button and Massa.

These stupid idiots keep making it worse and worse, now even the braking zones have asphalt next to the track.

And that is why grass and gravel runoffs were better, punishment for making a mistake.
