How long will the ultra softs last? I know that Monaco was a different set of circumstances than normal with track conditions etc but still, the softest tyre in your allocation lasting 40 odd laps is an absolute joke.

Now let me remind you that Montreal race in 1997 where tyre choice was way too soft and people had to make unexpected stops with visibly destroyed rear tyres

I remember that, and it was also very random between sets. Coulthard's first set could be run for 40 laps and his second set was destroyed in 12 laps which cause him to make the fateful pit stop.

Ditto for Schumacher who was on two-stop strategy but had to make third stop after eight laps or so.

Because of that, when Panis crashed, most people thought it was a rear tyre failure at first.

Damn, what a shitty way to end what was pretty interesting race. He'd have been better off sliding along a bare concrete wall at that angle, even in a '97 car.

Yet it took them 10 years and another serious crash (the near-fatal Star Mazda pile-up in the mid 2ks) before finally putting a nice smooth barrier to slide along instead of a dead-stop tyrewall.

Was it also 10 years ago when the track started to come apart at the hairpin leading to a few people running wide and a bit of a random element to the race?
