pretty sure that, given the mountainous area, rain means fog and thus automatically no running.

Will be interesting to see if Williams can keep up with Ferrari this weekend.
Maybe second grid row for them?

Williams is focused to start on 2nd or 3rd row then hold position and hope the people in front don't finish it

as stated by Rob Smedley

How about a great big concrete bollard. That will stop every fucker from trying to exceed the track limits without consequence. I'd happily settle for hay bales or Monza 1996 style tyres though. In fact the more I think about it, I want those Monza tyres back. Its a straight up deterrent without being a safety issue, of course being attached more rigidly than the 96 ones would help.

Come on man. Even in the early 1990s those tyres were hated by drivers. Senna himself threw a fit at Balestre during driver meeting at Hockenheim once. They cause the cars to flip, and turn an innocuous slide into a firey flip-fest (cf. a Ligier driver in 1993).

It worked at Monza that year because luckily, people just slightly touched them. But had anyone lost it in the straight and slid into them at speed, they'd have scooped up the remains with a coffee spoon.

You know me on here, I'm all advocate for track difficulty and as little forgiveness as possible, but tyre walls are a very bad idea. A grass strip is fine.

Ahh can someone please hurry up and invent a sarcasm font. cause I wasn't actually serious, well maybe 10%.

Additionally, Mateschitz also says that at the end of 2016 "there is no alternative to Renault".

They used to be a fun and likable operation. Now they are just bitter and hateful. What a turnaround.

McLaren is coming with a new nose for Austria, shame though that the Honda engine problems in a circuit like that, will make it very difficult to have any kind of real analysis of the new nose effectiveness

I was under the impression that Mateschitz was never part of the 'fun and likeable' image, tbh. But yeah, this is just painful to watch now. It's like a marriage breaking down, and we are all the friends who can see it coming.

Except the marriage breaking down is between Renault and F1, and Red Bull is just the most vocal party involved (possibly something to do with more mics being stuck in their faces than the likes of Lotus?)

Also, when has an F1 team owner/tycoon not been known for ridiculous exaggerated statements?

That is an enormously dickish move for the head of the team to say that stuff though. As a business owner, if one of my customers continuously publically said something along the lines of that about me (I assume there has been an internal dialog between the two over what needs to be done and how to go about it), I would straight up terminate what ever relationship I had with them there and then.

I have been on Red Bull's side, but that is just horseshit. That kind of public shaming and airing of dirty laundry does nothing constructive internally, in fact it just solidifies the rift between the two and makes it nigh on impossible to reconcile their differences. If the engine is a piece of shit for the foreseeable future, get rid of it, bite the bullet, be a customer for a year or two and work hard to try and entice a new manufacturer into the sport. Acting like a cock serves no purpose....unless there is another motive behind it.

Also with Renault, could they sell the IP rights to Infiniti who could then enter as a new manufacturer and build a new engine?

Perhaps Mateschitz is doing to Renault what Bernie is doing to F1. Intentionally driving down the value of the business in order to buy (or facilitate someone else purchasing) the assets for the lowest amount possible from it's current owners.

Starting to seem that way on both accounts.

I know everyone is focusing on VW on entering F1, but what about the other manufacturers? Are Ford interested? After all they have committed to Le Mans, F1 would be a good cross over. Would Toyota come back? If their mates Honda get their act together they might be tempted. Haven't Hyundai been rumored since forever? I kind of get the feeling that if someone new enters it might not be VW.

Oddly quiet session, both trackwise and forumwise.

And when I read the article on my BBC app it said: "incident-packed first practice".

Is it a lie?
