The 2004 Grand Prix of Bahrain marked the first ever round of the FIA Formula One World Championship to be held in the Middle East and the official culmination of a multi-million dollar project started back in September 2002 when the Kingdom of Bahrain signed a long-term deal to host the event.

Located at Sakhir, 30 km south-west of the island's capital, Manama, the Hermann Tilke designed circuit contains no less than five track layouts within one complex. Construction began in November 2002 and in the months prior to its March 2004 completion, work was going on around the clock. Over 12,000 tonnes of stone were used in the build, a third of it Welsh granite, chosen for the track surface due to its excellent adhesive qualities.

The original 5.412 km Grand Prix circuit was designed with the spectator in mind, with 50,000 grandstand seats, all providing excellent views. Those spectators (a total of 100,000 over a race weekend) get to see the cars heading into the external desert area, before coming back into the oasis-styled infield. Up to 500 journalists can also witness the action from the venue's purpose-built media centre.

A revised 'endurance' track layout was used for the 2010 event, with an additional complex starting at Turn Four extending the lap to 23 corners and 6.299 km, but the event is expected to return to the original track configuration for 2012. It offers the driver a unique experience in the way the circuit's width varies at the end of the different straights. This allows for diverse racing lines, and the 15-corner design provides at least three genuine overtaking opportunities.

It will be interesting to see if Mercedes' performance is really worse in hot conditions.

I hate to admit it but this track has given us some great races in the past few years.

All the shitty tracks have produced good races.

I think Austin & Sochi are the only two that haven't produced a really strong race.

The first race in Austin was decent. Although I slept through some parts because of jetlag.

First race at Austin was great IIRC. And therefore last year's race was so bad, because the first one was so good.

Don't forget the race will be held at night, so the asphalt temperature will be no near close to the ones at Malaysia.

Mercedes 1-2 30 seconds ahead of Vettel.

And Maldonado retires.

And Rosberg will complain after the race.

Bit boring to see 3 Tilkedrome-races in a row, but after Bahrain we're back to classic circuits.
This doesn't mean the race should be boring. Actually, I'm expecting one of the top races this years in terms of fighting and overtaking. Not sure if there will be a battle for the lead, though.
Also, looking forward to GP2 season.

If Hamilton doesn't make a mistake in Q3 and if there won't be a SC like last year then I can only see Hamilton winning three in a row.

I hope Williams will catch up a bit and will be able to fight for the podium with the Ferrari's.

Three in a row will be hard to achieve for Hamilton in Bahrein ;)

I don't know how to feel about Bahrain. I hate the layout, the forgiving run offs, the bland surroundings... Pretty much everything about it. Having said all that, last year's race was fantastic. Another one like that would be nice.

I think Bahrain has produced more good races than bad (I'd say 2009/2010 were the only 2 bad races).

I also generally like the layout, The 1st 3 corners have produced some good racing over the year as has the run down to turn 4 with battles often starting down at turns 1-3. I like the fast corners at 5/6/7 & the short run down to 8 has produced a few good bits of racing, Then there's the downhill hairpin at 9/10 thats pretty tricky for the drivers & the run to 11 which has again produced the odd bit of good racing & the uphill fast turn 12 thats a decent corner. Turns 14/15 have seen some good racing & there fairly tricky so we often see drivers running a bit wide.

Its actually interesting in that when the circuit 1st joined F1 in 2004 I absolutely hated it but then I downloaded it for F1 challenge on PC & after doing a few laps I started to really enjoy driving the circuit & while its not one of my absolute favorites its still a circuit i quite enjoy to drive on games/sims.
