Post subject:  Drivers who own their old cars

I've just had this discussion with my wife, and I'm throwing it on here because I'm drawing blanks - how many drivers and ex-drivers are known to own their old cars? I know that Jenson Button owns a Brawn chassis, and I think that Alonso owns one of his Renaults. Didn't Schumacher also get given a Mercedes?

There's surprisingly little information about this sort of thing, so I'd be very interested to know of other cases.

Not a driver as such but I know Adrain Newey was gifted one of his Red Bull's by the team, might have been the 08 car I think

I thought Mansell owned a Ferrari 640.

I think Dario Franchitti owns a lot of his cars. I know Juha Kankkunen has a whole garage full of old rally cars.

Colin Turkington has the BMW he won his first btcc championship in, think he's got a few others too. Pretty sure the McRaes own a few of their rally cars

Dale jr has a lot of old wrecked cars, including some of his own, all around his property.

I'm pretty sure Sterling Moss owns the car that nearly killed him too, it was on some TV show or other...

Montoya has a few in his garage, including his Brazil 2004 Wiliams and his Indy 500 car: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1jntg ... ntoya_auto

Jason Plato was given a 1997 Renault Laguna by the Williams Renault BTCC squad. Ok, so it was made up of body parts he'd damaged during the year but still.

And if the cars don't end up in a garage of a driver, what happens with them? I can't imagine the manufacturers just put them in their own storage somewhere

I remember the photo of Christian Fittipaldi`s apartments with his first Minardi on the wall.
And Schumacher own his Jordan 191.

At home with Jo Bonnier.

Okay, he ran his own team and he passed away in 1972, but that was a pretty cool installation IMO.

Sold to sponsors, sold to whoever is willing to pay, sold to teams in the BOSS GP series or end up being destroyed because noone wants then sadly enough.

McLaren stores all their stuff in a depot with restricted access

Emerson Fittipaldi owns some of the Copersucar he raced in 70's and also the 1989 car that he won the IndyCar championship (I guess that the one that won Indy 500 is at IMS

Rubens Barrichello also owned a 1993 Jordan chassis but that one was abandoned in a depot at Rio de Janeiro (dunno how it got there)

I think there is a big McLaren collection near the Donington Autodromo.

Also, if I remember correctly, Mika Hakkinen's McLaren of '99 in which he had a massive crash at Hockenheim, is stationed in Brussels? (I might be wrong here, could actually be on tour).

Regarding the opening post ... I was told by someone involved in curating an exhibition here (he works in the IT department for the city water company, but they have a Cultural Foundation with an exhibition space near Plaza de Castilla) in Madrid last year (with the Fernando Alonso collection) that Nando has one of all of his cars from throughout his career. Certainly there was one of each (including McLaren and Ferrari which surprised me that either let them go) present at the exhibition all the way back to his karting years. My friend, who we'll call Jose because it's a generic Spanish name, said it forms part of his contractual arrangements. Trophies too judging by the exhibition at least.

so McLaren still owns all their cars but eventually lends for exhibitions, I guess the ones at Donington will stay there until the museum shut down

I remember seeing that video when Lewis and Jenson went to the depot and where like children with new toys, going to the MP4/4

Not sure about the car itself, but he definitely owns the steering wheel, which was completely bent out of shape by his head. Last time I saw, he had it in his office when interviewed for something.

Completely forgot about this! He indeed had a car from every year of his entire career - loads of pics here:

I would imagine that Ferrari loaned him the cars, but I'm sure he owns the Renaults.
