*nods*

Still, Hamilton hasn't signed a contract yet so he could be a player in this.
Back to Mclaren or eyeing up red bull himself, opening up seats that Alonso/Vettel could slot themselves into.

Hamilton has no contract from 2016 onwards. He has a signed contract with Mercedes for 2015. That's not to say he won't break his contract if some things happen.

Now let's say Alonso does leave Ferrari and heads to McLaren for 2015 and there's a vacant spot next to Kimi. Ferrari know they are in rebuild mode and probably need a short-term (just for 2015, Vettel will probably come onboard 2016) driver that will help Kimi develop the car, but also have the mindset to cope with a potentially tough year. I doubt Ferrari will want to promote a junior driver like Bianchi as that could have an adverse effect on his future. Instead, why not Jenson?

It's a nice idea, but I'm not sure if Ferrari would be particularly bothered whether or not Bianchi has a good or bad year. F1's not that nice. If anything, they'll want to see how he copes with a shitbox of a car that he needs to help develop.

I like that theory, it would make this one of the craziest silly seasons ever.

wouldn't Alonso's Ferrari time be seen as a complete waste then?

I don't recall Ferrari holding a gun to Alonso's head staying 'you must sign this contract to drive for the team you've been after a seat with for many seasons'.

Alonso's had two very good title shots with Ferrari, one of which he lost entirely on his own.

I disagree with the last part, I think it's all to Alonso's credit that he got these title shots in the first place (and in 2010 partly because Vettel still made some mistakes back then). Ferrari has never produced a great car for an entire season for Alonso.

Correct, Alonso got himself into a position to win the title in 2012 but then was the master of his own downfall. 2010 was a team effort. But you win as a team and lose as a team. Alonso has done very well during his time at Ferrari and arguably should have 2 more titles. But then so should have Hamilton at McLaren, again in 2010 and 2012. But the challenge for those two have been they've both been trumped thanks to Vettel and Red Bull's dominant era.

I thought you meant 2010 (his fight with Petrov) with 'one of which he lost entirely on his own', but reading this I now know you meant 2012. Why exactly?

But I agree. I don't want to downplay Ferrari's part too much but I will always feel that Alonso deserved better. Not that Ferrari didn't want to win of course. :)

In 2012 Fernando had a handsome lead in the title and kept spouting crap to the media about being able to register a couple of retirements and he'd still win the title. He then drove like an ass on a couple of occasions, including driving himself off the road and into retirement at Suzuka and then lost the title.

Also, I didn't buy Alonso's consistent comments in 2012 about the car being one of the worst. Yes, at the start maybe, but near the middle of the season it was quite a handy and very reliable car. If I'm not mistaking, it even provided Fernando with pole position in Hockenheim.

The Lotus story could stick insofar that they could have Mercedes power next year.
