Spoiler:
The British Grand Prix is a race in the calendar of the FIA Formula One World Championship. It is currently held at the Silverstone Circuit near the village of Silverstone in Northamptonshire. The British and Italian Grands Prix are the oldest continuously staged Formula One world championship Grands Prix.

Grand Prix motor racing was first established in Britain by Henry Segrave at the Brooklands course in 1926 after his winning of the French Grand Prix in 1923 and the following year at the Spanish Grand Prix which raised interest in the sport. The first ever British Grand Prix was won by the French team of Louis Wagner and Robert Sénéchal driving a Delage 155B.

Silverstone has hosted the race regularly since the start of the F1 championship in 1950 (in which it was the first race of the first ever official World Championship) and every year since 1987; it alternated with Brands Hatch between 1964 and 1986, and with Aintree (better known as a horse-racing course) between 1955 and 1962.

Grand Prix History

Spoiler:
Like so many of England's racing circuits, Silverstone started life as an aerodrome. When the Second World War ended in 1945, England's other two circuits, Donington Park and the legendary Brooklands, had fallen into disrepair. And so it was that the outer taxiways and interconnecting runways of Silverstone became adopted by the Royal Automobile Club as the home for the British Grand Prix in 1948. The circuit was fast and challenging and in 1949 the shape was formed that remains the basis of the track to this day.

When the Formula One World Championship was incepted in 1950, Silverstone held the very first round, won by Guiseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo. In 1951 the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) was handed the lease by the RAC, and huge modifications were made. The pits were moved to the straight between Woodcote and Copse, from the Farm straight where they had originally been, and a short circuit was built within the larger circuit, cutting from Becketts corner to Woodcote.

From 1955 the British Grand Prix swapped venues between Aintree and Silverstone, but with the advent of the 1960s, Aintree fell out of favour and the race was switched between Silverstone and Brands Hatch.

In 1971 the BRDC bought the entire 720 acre plot on which Silverstone sits and went about redeveloping the track. New pits were built and a chicane was erected at Woodcote which provided close finishes and great overtaking opportunities.

In 1987, with speeds at the circuit reaching astounding levels, a corner was built before Woodcote, and in 1992 a new complex of corners was created between Farm and Woodcote.

In recent years various upgrades have been made to the track's facilities. A racing school now exists at the circuit and with government funding a new bypass has been built, greatly improving access to the once notoriously out-of-the-way venue.

Without exploding tyres it's difficult to say whether the race will be interesting like last year. Fortunately rain seems to be on its way and we may actually see wet tyres in use during a race since Brazil 2012 (or inters since Malaysia 2013). That would really spice up racing although Mercedes probably wins unless they're bombarded with 10 cm hailstones. GP2 & GP3 surely will be interesting given the mixed conditions.

Showers are forecast to be pretty intermittent, wouldn't be getting hopes up for rain.

We've had lots of rain forecast recently but it doesn't often materialise. I wouldn't trust the weather until the day before.

Though the way the weather is going this summer, all bets are off.

Saying that, I've stood through probably 100s of Kart races at the kart track where I work and the amount of times, even on rainy days, when the rain actually starts mid-race leading to a change in conditions is rare, certainly less than 5% of all the races I've seen.
In motorsport we should be thankful for any rain we see across the entire weekend.

But yes, first page of a race thread and all the posts are on weather once again :p

To shake things up I'll air an unpopular opinion: I like the new(ish) layout Silverstone run these days.
We've gained a lot more imo (2/3 overtaking spots) than we lost with a flat out acceleration zone that was Bridge corner.

Discuss.

A few weeks ago the Met Office had been predicting for days it was going to rain here, so we cancelled some plans we had, that morning I went onto the raintoday and monitored it all day, there was no fucking rain within 500 miles of us, but no, the Met Office had a big rain cloud over the South East the entire time and even on the forecasts throughout the day, kept saying rain is coming.

The Met office could not even find a piss up in a brewery if they were given written directions and gps co-ordinates, they'd still end up at the other end of the Country.

I don't like that much. I'd rather have shorter tracks that could mean more racing because it has more laps. but it's ok Silverstone be this way

Bridge corner was good before they put in the Abbey chicane.

I will never get used to the new Silverstone layout. Two pitlanes is so confusing.
