This year the championship will not be won by a Renault-powered car. Callin' it

This year, while having a slightly higher amount of unreliability than usual, will not be the crap shoot of high reliability the media thinks it will be.

Also by the end of the year we'll be cursing the fuel saving runs more than DRS or ERS

Any news on Lotus?

The constructors championship will win Ferrari. I would be surprised they dont win at least that.

I guarantee Ferrari will win sweet FA this year, bar a couple of races, after having said throughout pre-season testing and early season that "this is our year" but then say sometime mid-season they've given up on the season and will now focus efforts on 2015.

To quote Enzo Ferrari:
Quote:
Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines.
Since they are quite shitty on that first part in recent years, this season should be the one they have to claim.

I think it will be between Mercedes and Ferrari, the reason being chasis and engine are developed together from the start.

It'll be interesting to see how Vettel goes if Red Bull can't get the exhaust layout to his liking, which is where a lot of his advantage comes from.

You can make claims for all of the top three teams really.

There is a pretty good illustration over at autosport done by Giorgio Piola of how the 20014 may look like:

As for the nose: I could live with that...

I read on somewhere quotes from Horner, during an interview to Brundle on Sky, that Vettel have advantadge over his team mate since back in 2008 where EBD was not a factor. He just said Vettel is special in technical corners, regardless of exhaust reliance or not. He also said Vettel/Webber are pretty much the same on high speed corners but Vettel has a clear advantage on low and medium speed ones.

PS: I didn't see the interview. I read it with google translator(which may have lead to some misunderstandings) from a czech f1 site.

But, anyway, exhaust reliance is gone for next year. Still, I expect to see Vettel remain his edge on the technical corners because I think this "exploits the EBD better than the other in his driving" to be a myth.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Atrocious looking car and Piola might be quite right about that, unfortunately. Well, I must admit I'm kind enjoying seeing F1 continue to sink year by year with severe restrictions, ugly and dull cars, gimmicks to make up for the lack of real racing and to please the casual viewer or, at least, what the TV broadcasters believe those want.

Vettel is still quick and he'll be a factor, no doubt. Yes, it is the low/medium speed where he usually gained an advantage on Webber (which is why the latter's pole in Abu Dhabi was bloody impressive).

You just know on March 15th, Vettel will come round the final corner, take pole by +0.5s and destroy everyone's hopes :p

undoubtedly building a 2 second gap in the first lap, steering clear of the possible evil which is involved in opening the DRS.

Post subject:  Re: 2014 Random F1 Discussion

I was wondering, will the new ERS mean that the advantage of KERS will be gone? I mean, because ERS is used for so much of the lap (and I guess built in to the system to be deployed upon acceleration), will that hinder the racing? Because last year we had examples of drivers using KERS (Alonso at the start in Spain) so could that mean there's more focus on DRS?

Maybe I'm just being a retard, so could someone with an ounce of tech knowledge help?

I thought the front wings would be narrower again this year, but that computer model shows they are still as wide as the whole car :? They were introduced in 2009 in combination with the move-able flap on the front wing. It was a failure as it did not improve overtaking.

Author:  kals [ Thu Jan 02, 2014 5:05 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 2014 Random F1 Discussion

They are only 75mms narrower so there isn't much difference to the naked eye.

, yeah the Piola's animation, at least from this angles, is not portraying the real dimension of the 2014 FW. It will be a decrease in width by the number kals posted, on each side.

, from what I understood from the reviews I read, you're right. ERS won't interfere in overtaking as it's expected to be " built in to the system to be deployed upon acceleration" as you well put it. But maybe some team(s) won't incorporate it directly through throttle input(probably when 100%) and rather work like it have been so far, ie, upon driver's activation?! Afterall, it will be allowed a total ERS power of 120Kw to be deployed for 30 seconds, and that doesn't cover the whole full throttle period on any track, not even Monaco.
