With brain injuries, there can often be a lucid period prior to it deteriorating - Gary Hartstein has been posting on Twitter.

Here's hoping he pulls through.

I'm reading reports he's in a coma and in critical condition.... But so far it's twitter reports copying eachother. Apparently one from Olav Mol, Dutch F1 commentator since ages.

Also being reported by Bild http://www.bild.de/sport/motorsport/mic ... .bild.html

Fuckin hell. I clearly read a report earlier on CNN that his condition was definitely 'not serious.' Now, hes in critical condition according to DW :(. Come on Schumi!

Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition and in a coma following his skiing accident in the French Alps, according to the German's management team.

Please be okay, Schumi :( :( :(

So this is the usual "artificial coma". It IS a induced coma, but in fact it's like a prolonged, protective, anesthetic.

Sounds logical, from what I've learned it's to give the brain rest and prevent further swelling.

This says that he arrived in a coma. Who's right?

They might both be right. The bit about him arriving in a coma relates to the hospital that he was moved to for specialist care. So they may have sedated him at the first hospital so that he was safe and ready to be operated on at the second.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Yeah, just read that from someone who studies medicine.

Saw this on BBC news earlier, said it wasn't serious much to my relief.
So was shocked when just a minute ago it's headline news, and he's in a coma! I do hope that he pulls through this.

I just hope this is induced for his own good - if I recall correctly Massa was also in a coma following his accident?

An induced coma is standard procedure for dealing with certain types head traumas. The same happened with Wendlinger in the immediate aftermath of his Monaco accident in 1994.

Fingers crossed for Michael.

The details on the coma seem sketchy. BBC reported this, which has me concerned: "The 44-year-old German "was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival" the hospital in the south-east city of Grenoble said in a statement."

This is pure speculation, but he was first taken to Moutiers, so they might have induced him there.

Several news stations are reporting him in critical condition. Induced coma or not, thats not good.
