Hakkinen's is up there because it was while he was battling for a win and at very high speed. Title significance has no bearing on a tyre failing at probably over 200mph. Same with Berger at Hockenheim in 1989, famous because of the incident and him vaulting over the curbs at the first chicane.

True. But the title significance has an impact on its iconic status. I wasn't alive and I know about Mansell's. I was alive and I remember Schumacher's. Maybe I'm slowly putting Formula One facts out of my brain and replacing them with things that I need to remember (this would actually be a good thing) but I'd forgotten Hakkinen's despite watching it live - although now I think about it, it seemed important at the time given that Ferrari went and got a one-two at that race.

The one of Hakkinen in 1999, although very spectucular, was in the middle of the season, and in the end it didn't matter regarding the championship.

yes, though I remember it had happened just a few weeks after Schumacher's injury and the impact looked pretty similar. It was worrying!

Indeed, although if a tyre does have a problem...

(Yes, I know it was a wheel gun failure not a puncture, but still)

Imagine a tyre failure similar to what Massa suffered in THAT corner. I'm actually a bit worried about Nürburgring, especially if it's going to be a hot on race day and they don't have the new tyres already.

Note the shot across the bows at how the teams are using the product provided by Pirelli... i.e. not in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. So again, how was this Pirelli's fault?

Rversed mounting of the rear tires was also to blame: a practice where teams use right rear tyres on the left rear (and vice versa) for added durability; Pirelli advises against this but it is not against regulations.

Next week the teams will put the front tyres on the rear then tell Pirelli that the traction sucks.

This whole thing reads like a way for the teams to get rid of Pirelli frankly. Do as much stupid shit as you can, and eventually they'll leave and they'll get easy boring tyres back.

Why do I get the feeling this sketch sums up F1 right about now...

Seems that the earlier press release didn't go down too well...

Yes, how dare Pirelli for not admitting this was their own fault. It is utterly preposterous they may have properly understood the root cause of the issues that teams have been suffering, but not accepted full responsibility.

Swapping the tyres? Running them under the recommended pressures? Kerbs? Blocked improvements?

And the teams have the cheek to even point the finger at Pirelli? Jaysus...
Just go, guys. You did exactly what you were told and brought some on-track competition back to a sport that was too reliant on pit stop racing before your arrived.
This is how the sport rewards you.
Just run away now and let them grind their chassis into the ground next year....

2012 was such the perfect season with on track competitiveness, different winners and great racing.

2013 seems like the hangover we're all suffering from such a great party. Just everything that made that season great is coming back to bite us now.
Ehhh, there's always a natural low after a natural high, I guess.

*Edit* As I typed that post I was glad to see the BBC put the Pirelli statement about the teams misuse of their tyres on their BBC3 news bulletin, glad they're trying to get the truth out there to a mass audience.
Nice job BBC

*shrug* Not exactly Mass per se, but a completely different demographic to the type of person that would watch their main news bulletins, so it is spreading the Pirelli statement much further than it could have if it just left it on BBCNews.

In regards to the iconic tyre failures, yes Schumacher's was more significant than Hakkinen's, but which ones get played in a highlights reel about F1? Mansell, Hakkinen, Villeneuve and Berger. They are the most iconic. Schumacher's is mostly significant to hardcore fans. But iconic...no.

In all my time following F1 activley (since 1993) I have ever only had a couple of jump out of the seat and missed heart beat moments. Senna in 1994, Hakkinen in Adelaide 1995 and Hockenheim 1999, Kubica in Canada 2007 and Webber in Valencia 2010.

Out of those Kubica and Hakkinen 1999 were terrifying to watch live. Kubica mostly as I was certain he was dead on impact.

So...
if the reasons are because:

1) left tyres were fitted on the right and vice versa against Pirelli's advice
2) too low tyre pressures used by the teams against Pirelli's advice

then there is totally not a problem and no need to switch back to the kevlar belt tyres if teams would be forced to use these tyres correctly then?

And then I wonder; those teams and drivers that are moaning about safety and want to switch to the previous tyre (i.e. Newey), then why did they not fit the tyres according to Pirelli's advice which would mean things would be a lot safer then?

I have no clue who is right, who is wrong, who or what to blame (Pirelli? the track? the teams? the FIA?)

If Pirelli is 100% convinced these are the reasons, then the sollution is pretty simple IMHO.

Undisciplined, uncooperative, blaming clients? I feel for Pirelli.

I hope the bills get paid in due time at least
