A few years ago when my career included various trips to South Carolina (Michelins American home) I was able to chat with a few guys from their motorsports arm. Michelin prefers to race against other tires. It's why it has never entered NASCAR. And why it won't return to F1.

but nowadays they're trying to hold costs and a close competition might get things really expensive

Most so-called 'cost cutting' is bullshit anyway. The teams just spend that money elsewhere. Many loopholes.

Super-Soft & Medium tyre compounds will be used this weekend.

They also have a prototype tyre which will be used during FP1.

Randomly here's FP2 from 2004:

Yep, they prefer to spend more money but that they can say 'hey we beat the others, we are better than the others'

That's how I prefer things tbh.

and the question of cost-cutting is hardly relevant because it doesn't relate to the teams, just the tyre manufacturer(s).

How do you figure that?

If the cost of tyre development goes up, then that increase in cost is passed on to the teams through the cost of the tyres.

Yeah I'm sorry I'm only 26 so I've never watched V12's.

Fernando Alonso has warned Sebastian Vettel that the world championship leader's luck must change soon.

Tomorrow's PC includes Hembery, Brawn, Domenicali and Horner so that might be interesting. Whitmarsh and Kaltenborn are also there, but they might have a smaller role in the discussions.
