The undeniable truth is, 90% of racing fans in europe dont really care about the Indy 500.

And it doesn't matter whether it's on the same day as the Monaco GP or not, the people and media just don't care for IndyCar these days. Unless someone dies of course...

True! They have their own racing series, and we europeans have ours.

I only watch every year the Daytona 500, the rest not much interested.

The viewing figures for the Indy500 in the UK last year were so low. Something like 18,000 I think.

Indy 500 is the only Indycar race they show live here in Holland, they couldnt care less about he rest of the season.

You say people don't care, but they do. This is because it is one of the biggest motorsport events in the World. A blue ribbon event. It would be helpful to those fans in Europe (and the perception of caring) if there was good coverage of the race, but I don't think there is.

Sky coverage of the Indy 500 was fine, because it was the US coverage with a lot less ads. And it was live.

People in Europe don't care. It won't make the news unless something huge happens. It will be a single page in a newspaper if they're lucky. It's the largest 1 day sporting event in the world and it'll get a 1 page section, whilst a basic football rumour will get 3 pages.

People don't care - motorsport fans do. Not F1 fans, not BTCC fans, not casual viewers. Indy 500 means nothing here except to those who are so passionate about motorsport that we know what it is, and what it means in the world of motor racing. My room mate doesn't know anything about motor racing (but is getting into F1), he's head of the Indy 500 but knew so little that he didn't know if it was NASCAR or what. That is how little people in Europe care.

Are Sky covering it at all this year? I thought they might for the 500, but I'm fearing it will be ESPN only.

I know that Indycar put full races up on their youtube channel. Do they do that for the 500, and how many days after? I guess there's always a stream...

Sorry, I know this isn't the correct thread. :p

So I think we're actually agreeing. I said "people" but meant to repeat what Mattzel said..."racing fans", which is what you're referring to. Am I right?

Yes people don't care, but I still disagree with the concept that 90% of "racing fans" don't care.

Ellis speaks the truth right there. Oval racing means nothing to people here, Indy included. Only a few motorsports fans do care about it.

Kinda agreeing. But there aren't many racing fans here. There are F1 fans, and there are casual viewers. But people who care about racing, people who know who races in GP2, people who have heard of the Porsche SuperCup, people who know that Formula 3 exists..those are rare. Those are the people who watch the Indy 500, and there isn't many of them.

Someone posted the viewing figures of all the series on UK TV once, and iirc, Indy 500 was similar levels to GP2 Qually or something. And GP2 Qually is only covered under the F1 contract on the dedicated channel. No doubt that Indy would never be allowed on the F1 channel.

In Holland we have viewing numbers of 150.000. But don't think it is that impressive given the good broadcast time and the fact it is broadcast by one of the regular channels.

And with F1 highlights during the evening having a viewing number of 80,000 (and with the race on a pay channel), if they get a similar amount of viewers that's not bad.

Sky even stopped advertising Indycar, especially once they got F1 They just didn't care about it, it's no wonder it ended up with the viewing figures it did.

It's Indy Sunday, nobody cares about Monaco. I don't understand why they insist on holding these 2 races on the same day so often. Choose different dates you idiots, you're stealing each others spotlight.

I never gave a shit to Indy or any oval racing. Whilst Monaco is pure class even if a procession simply because of the challenge it is. So, it will be F1 all the way for me this weekend.

PS: I'll only hope for a Takuma win, otherwise, I don't care at all.

Why choose? Go for the Coca-Cola Monapolis 1337 weekend!

It's what the true race fan does ;)

I won't be able to watch anything as my exams are starting soon and I'll be studying all day.

Better enjoy all that racing instead of complaining brothers.
