Wasn't there a series that bought the A1GP cars that did something like that. Ie. Check the site Wed 25th for big news and when you visited the site on the 25th expecting to see they'd announced a calender or some racing celebrity had been roped in to promoting the series, the announcement was that they'd be making a bigger announcemnt the follow month.

So that's the 2012 car with an ever so slightly different nose and the step covered.

I was surprised to see people saying they'd got used to the looks of the cars in previous pages but didn't get round to replying.

To me the looks of the cars are important, it's a link back to the 7/8 year old that I was when I first started watching the sport.
At that age the fact the cars looked cool was the first thing that drew me in, the action, excitement and passion came later, it was purely the looks of the cars that got me watching in the first place.

I think as hardcore fans we find it hard to think like the casual fans but I'd wager the looks of the cars is a bigger deal to them than us. I certainly heard a lot more complaining about the noses during the F1 in Pubs events last year, though you could argue that everything else about 2012 was so great that it was the only slight negative people were searching for to moan about.

Either way, I'm glad they're going or at least they tried to do something about it.
Hopefully in 10 years time we'll look back on them the same way we did the ugly x wings or the extra monaco only wings in 2001 or other flash in the pan developments that seem out of step with the progression of the sport now.

About that Ferrari picture, perhaps some additional detail would assist....

From F1Technical.net

Quote:
Hi all!

This is how probably, the new Ferrari 664 will looks, according to F1 painter Paolo D`Alessio.

According to a quick Google search, the 664 is actually the denomation given to the project of the 2013 car. It doesn't necessarily mean it will be called the Ferrari 664.

Judging by that picture, it has different lower sidepod design, a compact gearbox and a Coada-effect exhaust system.

Last year (or year before that?) the drawing of the Ferrari was quite accurate but sometimes it has not been anywere near of the real thing.

The irony of car launches is that they look almost nothing like the car that turns up to the first race. Most of the time it's just nice to see the livery.

I miss the old days of exotic launches in other countries and locations, now they just take a sheet off at Jerez or Barcelona

Because there isn't time any more. The off season is shorter than ever, so theres no time for these launches anymore. It's cheaper and easier to turn up on the first day of testing with it.

Sauber's is at their factory, Force India's is at Silverstone. I bet Mercedes will do a private shakedown before the launch as well. McLaren's is in the UK and Lotus may well launch at their factory.

I don't miss those glitzy launches, because a lot of the time they just looked silly.

I do agree with the cost cutting, but equally if they were that bothered, they'd do all of their winter testing at Silverstone not in Spain!

They seem like less of an event than the past, though we can blame the tight regs for that since we can't really expect anything really out there like we used to. The innovation is a lot more subtle these days.

But they test in Spain because it minimises the chances of bad weather. Testing in the rain is pretty worthless, testing in sub zero is completely worthless. Whilst it gets cold in Spain, it's better than Silverstone. It's also continental, which means no air fare. That and Paul Ricard are probably the best places for testing given the time of year and climate.

A winter test in Silverstone usually involved sitting in the garage drinking cups of tea, wondering if it'd stop raining that week.

Oh they'll be flying the mechanics down!

10c and dry this week - not too shabby! It would be nice if they split the tests a bit - for the fans. One in the UK and one somewhere else in Europe. Spaniards get 3 tests and 2 (well, 1 now) races! :p

Yeah but flying the mechanics down is a nothing cost compared to flying cars and equipment. :P Otherwise they'd test in Abu Dhabi every time. We're having a VERY mild winter this year (it's January and I'm out in just a T shirt in fucking Scotland), so they'd have gotten away with it this year. But normally it'd just be a huge waste of time, money and organisation.

Those types of launch were always the norm. Glitzy launches are over indulgent and are actually a rarity. That said a couple of them were pretty spectacular. McLaren in 1997 and Benetton's in 1996 or 1997 were the best for their utter exuberance.

Huge waste of money. I don't want to see that shit ever again.
