I remember a race at Melbourne, 2008 I think, can't remember exactly, the tyre wear was huge, the last laps were crazy, Kubica crashed and many drivers were suffering a lot.

Are you thinking of 2006? The race that wasn't the first of the year and due to it running slightly later the temps were much colder meaning there was 1001 seperate safety car periods?

*Mental Note Research if Kubica was in the sport in 2006 before posting this*

Ahhh hell it's late I can't be arsed, if it's not that one then that's ANOTHER example :p

Hahaha that 2006 race was awesome! But Kubica wasn't there :p But we both got it wrong, I just did a little research and the race I was thinking about was the 2009 one.

Yeah I remember that, the fight at the end of the race between Kubica and Vettel was pretty exciting.

yeah it was in 2009. Robert would have easily won this race if there hadn't been that accident because both Vettel and Button had huge problems with tyres.

It was the first year of the slick tyres since 1997, so they were worried about the tyre wear and it showed to be critical for some drivers at the end. Melbourne often provides some very good race action and unpredictable results. In 2008, with only 6 cars crossing the line at the end, 2006 with all the crashes, some start crashes that took important drivers out all over the years. I remember in 2003 the first laps were insane too. Melbourne is a fantastic place for F1. I remember in 1999, the first victory of Irvine, everything happened in that race, there were so many changes all over the race and even De La Rosa scored for Arrows in a very weak year for the team, the only point of the team all over the year. Webber did the same in 2002 for Minardi. Thinking of all that is great to heat up before the season starts!

Even back to the early years with Hill retiring on the pace lap, Brundle's accident, McLaren's team orders.

Albert Park is one place that has seen its fair share of drama. Contrast to some of the new tracks where nothing seems to happen at all.

The man who might have the fastest car has no idea who has the fastest car or how fast the other cars are.

So that's clear.

Also, I don't know how many of you read Autosport magazine, but - and this is for codename_47 especially, there's an article in the back bemoaning the loss of gravel traps! :p

Is that article available online or only in the magazine?

I remember back in the early 2000's when tarmac starting replacing gravel, drivers including Frentzen and Barrichello complained about how safe they were. I'll have to look for that article.

Trivia question (to which I don't know the answer myself, maybe it's in that article?): what was the first F1-induced gravel => tarmac change? Earliest I know was the loss of gravel at Raidillon in 2001 (with subsequently the installment of the new endurance-pitlane)

The Autosport article mentions tarmac replacing gravel at Club corner, Silverstone in 1998. Not sure if that was F1 induced.

Ya, I flicked through it at the supermarket today and saw that. Hear Hear is all I can say.

Was surprised it was as early as 1998 that Tarmac appeared anywhere though.
(Though don't forget Paddock Hill Bend at Brands Hatch had a lot of Tarmac down for a long part of the 80s, yet they have gravel there now *shrug* )

Well no Paul, you're not entirely right. There was tarmac on the outside of Paddock Hill bend, but there wasn't that much. Not much at all.

Well I've been watching some FFord festivals on YT over the off season, seems the thinking was more about preventing red flags due to stalled cars rather than slowing them down.

Now with the safety car era, I guess they're free to put gravel back down without worrying about too many reds.

Though Druids now has tarmac too, swings and roundabouts :p

Yes indeed, and that tarmac was so effective for BTCC last year when Jackson's engine blew and dumped oil on the racing line... :p

Yeah, gravel might even have soaked some of that up and even allowed a couple of them to escape under their own momentum instead of being aimed at an already full runoff like a guided missile....

But I'm sure the safety campaigners would argue that the gravel would ensure definite flip and at that speed they'd go straight into the barriers and into the crowd, killing 200 people. Ho hum
