But I also feel that crashes like this helped create the illusion F1 was so save no-one would ever die again and then have everyone freak out after Imola 1994. |

Wow, thanks for that picture, the insides of the side pods are fascinating to me. There's virtually no protection for the driver and possibly a data recorder (or whatever it is) is just duct taped on the inside. All of this cutting edge race technology and the debris grills in there look like they just took one of those things you put vegetables in to cook them on the BBQ, took it apart and zip tied it in there lol |

Dale Kistemaker has a great archive of behind the scenes photos from the 80's, like this one when they made small repairs with polyester resin and tin gallons making the necessary pressure on the area |

funny that once happened in F1, but it was 1960 and traffic legislation wasn't that worrying Imagine that happening in Southern California today, as the race was run at Riverside |

Scotty wrote: It's not F1, but Group C, I know, but I was reminded of these images the other day. I think this is cool. To get to Sandown race track for the 1984 WSC race at Sandown, instead of loading the race cars to trucks and getting them to take them the 2km trip from their base they had set up, they just drove the race cars there. This is them going down Dandenong Road. In case anyone asks, no it wasn't legal. Several people called the police but they'd arrived at the track by then. Many teams did that at Le Mans until the 1980s also, so that may been Porsche's usual MO still then! They stopped doing that after one of their cars got stuck in traffic on race morning and overheated. IIRC Norbert Singer mentioned that in an interview in Motor Sport Magazine a few years ago. |
