What a fantastic first post. I've only ever seen aftermath of that incident before. Thanks.

You're welcome my friend; there's plenty more where that came from.

lol, I had that picture, but always assumed it was Watson at Monza in his infamous carbon fiber monocoque live crash-test.

What with the impending demise of Caterham and Marussia, here's fellow strugglers Guido Forti, Luca Badoer and Andrea Montermini with the Forti Ford FG03 at it's unveiling. Still very fond of this chunky beast almost 20 years on.

That was the last car to use a manual gearbox. If you watch the Moreno Imola video, you can see him doing heel/toe 8)

Wasn't that down to the fact that the FG01 was effectively just an updated 1992 Fondmetal? I forget exactly what it was based on but it was ancient tech, hence the fact it was usually 9 laps behind at the flag...

I thought it was an updated F3000 car. I know the Life was and I'm sure about the Forti as well.

You can actually still drive this very car at Rockingham for just under a grand. They fit it with an exhaust silencer though :(

Forti did buy Fondmetal's assets, and there was a strong rumour that the FG01 was just a re-worked car, but I don't think it was much more than a rumour. The FG01B, of course, was just a reworking of the '95 car. Personally, I can't see much similarity between the GR02 and the FG01:

anyway Forti team could take the 7th place in 1995 :)
PS. I bought the Sadia frozen nuggets (when they were available at the Russian market) only because of Forti sponsorship :D

7th? I thought their best result was 9th in 1995. Although Diniz did briefly get classified in 8th at the Brazilian GP before the DSQs of Schumi and DC were rescinded.

Diniz finished 7th in Australia 1995.

Ok, so it seems the FG01 was more a mixture of design elements of the GR02 and the ideas for what would have been the GR03 in 1993 had the team not folded but WAS a "new" car to all intents and purposes. Just a rubbish one. All the above gleaned from the ever accurate and totally reliable wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forti_FG01

Certainly it had a very similar nose section to the GR02 in the early part of the season. Note the much higher sidepods and the lack of an airbox.

Yeah, there's definitely a family resemblance between those two. Always interesting when you can see a designer's ideas carry over between teams, like the BT55 and the MP4/4.

Interesting that you mention Brabham, as it happens the the family line is even longer as the GR02 is apparently based on the design for the Brabham BT61 which was never built and was the successor to Damon Hill's first F1 ride - the BT60.

While on the subject, does anyone else agree that the BT60B was ugly as hell, with that pink-dark blue-light blue color combo and the weird nose?
