How a silver car should be, McLaren 1998. (Wouldn't mind seeing Mercedes dominate that 14-16 era if the cars weren't so ugly. Much better with the beautiful aero and color of the new era. But let's stay on topic....)

Recently saw this write-up from Philip Morris' Peter Schreer and some discussions from 1994 where McLaren were chasing Rubens (including looking to get him in the team before the end of the season), and Jordan wanted to replace him with [redacted] "as long as his family would not come to races". Given that there was also an issue with a sponsor, the implication is it may have been Verstappen - can't think who else it might be. Would tie in with wanting him to come in for the second half of 1999

As an aside, Rubens was advised to turn the offer down and Ron never spoke to him again

I'm not sure 'Jos Verstappen' fits into the first redacted space - you can also see the bottom of what might be a 'g' poking out from the bottom of that space, about three quarters of the way along. It certainly isn't two 'p's.

EDIT: It could also be a single 'p' - perhaps 'Jean-Christophe' (Boullion)?

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

could be Christian Fittipaldi, sponsored by Marlboro and with a prominent family in the business that could clash with Eddie Jordan

Ah I can see what you mean

Here's a suggestion - Katayama. Was having a great season, and had Mild Seven backing (gap seems a bit big for that, though, unless it's Japan Tobacco). But not sure why his family would be an issue

I think you've cracked it, I think that fits.

Yeah Fittipaldi seems to add up, especially if Emmo and Wilson were interfering - I don't know if that was something that was happening at Footwork or Minardi previously. The Philip Morris Latin America link means it makes sense as to why Hogan and Schreer would be discussing him

I think I've been reading the sponsorship line wrong - I think it's saying that Jordan were chasing a particular sponsor and that that sponsor would theoretically clash with Philip Morris. So it must have been another tobacco company - logical shout would be Benson and Hedges even if it wasn't until 1996 that they stepped in

Mercedes were very keen on having Fittipaldi in at McLaren for 1995. Ironically it was Philip Morris who overruled because they wanted a world champion in the team...

It really turned out great for them, that year.

Yeah, it all makes for a very weird and hilarious read in his latest autobiography

And yeah the F3 driver is Magnussen - in the process of dominating British F3 at the time, before he started to consume too many of the products he was advertising
