I see Senna in that photo, and made me think that exact same thing. Kind of like he's turning straight into the inside barrier, knowing that the front of the car will slide massively.

Different era, though. Maybe everyone did that for decades, but I wanna think that I'm a good observer.

I remember an onboard pole lap from the early 00's (maybe Ralf in 2003), with the usual Brundle commentary, when he says something along the lines of "aim to the wall, because the car will slide wide", while entering the Casino turn.

Wasn't this the reason behind Senna's retirement in 1988? He clipped the inside of Portier because he was pushing less than before, so the cars grips slightly more and takes a tighter line.
Also the reason behind Hulkenberg's most heart-breaking podium loss, at Baku (2018 I think).
