Mercedes sucks balls and should be ashamed of their performance since their re-entry into F1 even though they won a race.

Yeah actually that's better :p

It's simply the same performance level as the Honda and BAR team.

The way it sound, give the impression that Schumacher have been horrible most of the season. In fact, China apart, I can't think of any other track where Rosberg was truely faster than him. Nico also fairly outqualified him in Valencia but Schumacher was better in the race. Michael have been faster in most qualifyings: Melbourne, Sepang, Monaco, Silverstone, Hockenheim. There are also a lot of others where he looked, at least, as fast as Nico but had bad luck or didn't take part in Q3: Bahrain, Barcelona, Montreal, Hungary.

If you also look into races where both finished, Schumacher is beating Nico by a confortable margin.

My personal feeling is they're milking Schumacher as a marketing tool rather than simply for driving ability. If they just had Nico and another, no-one would give two hoots about them. Only 26 points ahead of Sauber, lmao.

That might be the case, but still there isn't any other possible better choice for Mercedes. Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton won't ever go to such a team.

Not really, more that Spa is his favourite track and he always used to be ultra-competitive there if not completely blow everyone else away.

That factor alone should allow him to be in the mid/low top ten even if the car is shitty.

yeah, even in 2010 and 2011 Michael was quite good in Spa, despite being horrible in many tracks. He really should do good there but I don't think it will be relatively by the same amount as past 2 years because he improved quite a lot in most other tracks :)

Here is a fun fact, Nico has 77 points and Schumi has 29.

 Doesn't matter, Schumacher is a legend and therefore still has fans who'll do anything to twist and turn the reality to make him look good.

Another fun fact: Schumacher has 6 retirements whilst Nico has none.
But of course: following the TBK-Light logic he is to blame for all of those DNFs...

Yes, the board mostly agrees he had very bad luck this year, hence the awful grand piano joke every GP

I think Schumacher has improved slightly, but he's still too inconsistent. Rosberg's pace has stayed the same since the start of 2010 really, Schumacher has just worn off that race rustiness that held him back. This type of racing is different to his era of racing and I think his age has obviously caught up with him. He's just clumsy really (and you could say that he was in Career Part One) - he didn't take into account the pace difference between new/old tyres in Singapore last year and then did the same thing in Spain this year.

That said, it's incredible that he's still competitive at the age of 43. I mean, people go on about how amazing it is for people to take part in 3 Olympic Games, and that's 8 years. Schumacher has been at the top for 20 years. It'd be brilliant if he could win at Spa 20 years after his first ever win and then bow out gracefully at the end of the year. The problem is what next? I mean, this was a three year project. Schumacher has got better over the three years, but the results are worse - bar Valencia - and the team, for all of the promise, has moved down a position on 2010 and 2011. Is it realistic to expect them to improve in 2013? I don't think so, not until the new engine regs in 2014. By which time, Schumacher will be 45...

Calculate all the points he has lost from retirements, and I still don't think he'll even come close to Nico's total. Aside from losing an almost certain podium at China (think he was on for 3rd), he hasn't lost that many points.

I'm pretty sure he would be on par with Nico at least.

I'd say maybe 35 points or so. If you look at his six retirements then that's probably fair. What do you reckon? 8 in Australia, 15 in China, 8 in Monaco and where was he running in Canada? I can't remember, 5th or 6th? Spain was his fault for clattering into Senna. He's been closer to Nico on pace, but not quite as good. It maybe should be 80 points to 60, which would be a fair summary of how each driver has done. I wouldn't say he's been on par with Nico.

Then again, everyone credited Schumacher with making Ferrari such a strong team. Should we also credit him for making Mercedes a shit team?

Drivers like Prost, Senna, Piquet even Mansell in the bygone era and Hamilton and Alonso in this era have key points to them that Schumacher doesn't. They all could out perform their cars, backs against the wall, they don't have the best or even 2nd best car, yet they can still pluck wins and pole positions from pure driving excellence. Alonso is the prime example of that this year, Hamilton in the latter part of 2009.

That's exactly what he did from 1996 to 2000 on more than just a "few" occasions. Also, Mansell???

That's my opinion anyway. I am no journalist, I have only been watching F1 since 2002, but that's how I look at it.

I think this is where lies the problem. You should have been there every GP week-end, watching him battle race after race against stronger cars until his 2000 title, then those 3-4 years of Ferrari dominance would look like fair compensation for all the struggle.

Also, I'm interested as to what made you stick to F1 if you started in 2002? I started in 1996 and it was the Schumacher heroic battle in a crappy Ferrari against the big Williams guys that made me enjoy it and never look back since then. Not sure I'd have been as attracted to the 2002 F1 to be fair

All 2nd placed WCC cars are equal, but some are more equal than others.

The closest to an F1 bad boy recently would have been Hamilton back when he got penalties every other race and drove aggressively.

Sato would have been a good candidate too, but both are way too gentlemanly calm and smiling outside the track to get the "bad boy" title.

I'll settle with Montoya a far as the past decade goes.

And in the brief Editor's note Autosport describe Maldonado as the Balotelli of F1...

So that means he's violent, lazy, arrogant bordering on the obnoxious, unfaithful to every woman he has a relationship with as well as sleeps with hookers and then gets too much attention from the media.

Nice comparison Autosport

Imagine how Autosport would cope if Paul Tracy had got an F1 drive in the 90s....
