CIRCUIT HISTORY

[spoiler]The Hockenheim circuit was built in 1939 as a high-speed test track for Mercedes-Benz who needed a venue to test for the Tripoli Grand Prix. The original track was almost 8 kilometres long and was formed of two long curved straights with a long corner at either end.

When war broke out the construction was halted and in the post-war Germany the Nurburgring became the venue for Formula One, with Hockenheim hosting a few smaller events. When a plan to build an Autobahn through the circuit was approved, the government supplied Hockenheim with a large sum by way of compensation. This money was used to build a new circuit, the now famous Hockenheim circuit which cut through the forest before looping into the wonderful stadium section around which large grandstands were erected.

In 1968 Hockenheim hit the headlines when Jim Clark was killed there in an F2 race. Nevertheless, Formula One came to the track in 1970 as the Nurburgring was quickly becoming outdated. Once the Nurburgring had been updated however the sport returned there, leaving Hockenheim with national and F2 events.

In 1976, Niki Lauda suffered horrific burns at the Nurburgring and from that point on Hockenheim became the home of the German Grand Prix. In 1980 Patrick Depailler was killed in testing at the track, and a chicane was put in to break up the fast Ostkurve. Didier Pironi suffered terrible injuries to his legs in an accident in 1982, though Patrick Tambay brought the Ferrari team some consolation with a win that weekend.

Ever since the debut of Michael Schumacher, the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim has been one of the most atmospheric races of the season, the noise in the stadium section being quite deafening at times. In 2002 the long runs through the forest were done away with and the layout of the track was heavily modified. Despite arguments that it had lost some of its character, the first race at the new track, in 2002, was deemed a great success and has remained a regular feature on the Formula One calendar ever since.

I like Hockenheim, it provided some great races in the past, of course the better ones in the old layout, but we also had some nice moments in the new Hockenheim. I remember in 2002, the Kimi/Montoya battle was something wonderful. I hope and I believe we will have a good race there, as last year the German GP was held at Nürburgring, this is the first time DRS will be used in Hockenheim, so I'm really looking forward to it.

The layout may suit Mercedes cars very well, so I expect a very strong Michael Schumacher in his home race. McLaren will be also strong, actually, Mercedes engines will be strong there. Wonder how Ferrari will deal with the conditions, I didn't expected them to be strong at low temperatures at Silverstone, but they showed a great form, I wonder if they will be able to repeat that in Hockenheim.

Tires will be medium and soft again?

Yes. I added the Hockenheim tyre range to the opening post.

new Hockenheim is just so featureless. You could say that at least they kept the stadium section which makes up for it, but that's untrue. Now they fly through it with high downforce cars while in the past they would snake their way around it, often power sliding.

Because there is really no character and it lost its uniqueness, this is probably one of my least favourite tracks on the calendar.

Also added to Tobias post, in the past drivers told that they could hear the crowd noise over the car in the stadium section which did not happen elsewhere. Probably quite like that due to fact that they enter from the forest section.

same here, and I also don't like Nürburgring. The only German GP which I like is held at Sachsenring, in MotoGP

Really like this track. Whether it be on video games or the actual circuit. People are still shedding tears over the old circuit but meh so be it.

Whilst I expect S2 to be a real pain for the RBR's given the low speed ability they've shown since the Valencia update I expect them to be leading the pack. However will Lotus [the drivers, car and team] finally be able to string a whole weekend together? Their pace in Silverstone was great but as per usual, poor performance from one driver, shitty strategy and average qualifying form hinder them.

The circuit's pretty much all about traction though, problem is do we expect the form shown in Canada or the super close pack we saw in Valencia? Mclaren are supposed to be bringing a pretty big update as well, with both new parts and the stuff they couldn't use in Silverstone.

Heh. Hadn't seen that.

They've been consistently quick in races, have one of, it not the best tyre wear of any of the cars in the field and yet can't put it all together. The poor strategy decisions are holding them back quite a bit though.

I say this and yet Kimi will probably show up in Spa and show everyone how its done yet again.

Old forest layout with DRS at all straights and the new Pirelli tyres would be a freaking racin'-gasm.

Hell, make it 2 DRS activation zones on the same straight. Would have as many lead changes as a superspeedway CART race.

Bomb the new Hockenheim, revive the old one!

That's what I've been saying for almost a decade now...

It was such a stupid idea to change the track in the first place. Those responsible should be shot.

I always loved the old Hockenheimring, especially while playing F1-games I always chose it for a quick race. Moreover, nowadays every track feels like a stadium and there are no trees or even grass anymore near the track.
The forest was one thing I always loved about old Hocke. Today, there's only Spa and Monza left in which the drivers go over 300km/h through the aisle of trees.

It's a mandatory Tilke-corner, so they could have more corners and proudly announce that they have 17 challenging turns, when turn 5 is not a turn and turn 11 is a...a...a straight. Wouldn't you have 17 turns instead of 15? Like you would rather have Singapore instead of Monza, because Singapore has more of those challenging turns. Norisring is boring and Valencia is great, because it has more challenging layout on the map. Welcome to the Tilke-logic of track designing.

FIA doesn't expect Tilke to design 6 kilometer long tracks with 25 odd corners that are just like bending the paper clip.

The FIAs briefings on circuits are pretty strict.

+1

but wait, don´t bomb the offices, or I don´t get more free tickets. :p
just bomb the Mercedes-Area and the Parabolica and repave the old layout.

Hockenheim is my home-track, but I won´t attend the Race as we are running a 6h-race that weekend in Landau.
