Cool, have a nice time there man! It must be amazing to go to a F1 race in such a beautiful place as Hockenheim.

The first corner at Hockenheim is allways a problem, there were several start accidents there all over the years, in 1994 lots of cars were out of the race there, some even at the straight, 2000 start crash was very important for the final results of the race, 2001 was complicated too and many other small accidents. If I remember correctly, in 1994, after all the first lap crashes there were around 10 ~ 12 cars out. Nice thing was to see both Ligiers in the podium.

Formula 1 needs a first lap pileup.

I just want to hear Brundle one more time saying "total carnage".

Yeah, its been a loooong time without a real pileup in the first corner, drivers don't risk that much anymore, its good in one hand as we still have many cars battling for positions, but its bad when we don't have surprises like big names out of the race in the start, that allways brings some fun to the race.

People have said that's a result of the current era of F1, in the old days drivers new the best places to advance your position was at the start and during the pit stops, so that lead to them being a little more desperate to get by than nowadays, forcing their way into half chances that were never going to work, etc.
Today, on the start, a driver can think "dammit, he got by me, oh well better not force the issue and cause a crash, there's always KERS down the next straight, or the DRS will be open in 3 laps, tyres might go off, etc.
More weapons in a drivers hand like that leads to less desperation on the startline.

Thinking back I'd wager that despite the higher racing action we're getting at the moment, the amount of actual big crashes, safety cars and such are actually decreasing rather than increasing....dunno who collates that sort of data though.

Exactly! You're absolutelly right! The drivers don't need to risk a whole race in the first meters anymore. Like you said, there are a lot of possibilities for them now. About the ammount of crashes and SC decreasing, that's much because of the changes at the circuits, the fake grass to avoid a driver lose the car when he goes over the kerb too much (back in time it was either gravel or real grass), the kerbs are easier to take, they are developed to not be so difficult, the runoff areas are huge, and the biggest part of them are made of tarmac right now, the circuits are much wider, everything is done to avoid crashes and its very rare to see a real big crash right now.

If all the tracks looked like Paul-Ricard, I will simply stop watching any racing except rally and motorcycle road racing. There is no purpose to racing where there is no danger or any sense of speed IMO.

DRS will probably be on the backstraight (I'd think)

Already confirmed! Detection after the 3rd corner and the drs zone before the hairpin.

Oh boy, they are going to to devalue the only natural passing place on the circuit.

Pretty standard for DRS now days. Could be used to get the cars closer to each other to help passing in other places, or turn another straight into a passing zone - but we'd rather just give away passes.

I know it's stupid to place it there because all the overtakes are there anyway, but what's the alternative?

This is exactly how I feel. Its great to see the safety standarts improving, but there should be a balance in everything in life, current cars are extremelly safe, we can see for accidents like Kubica's one for example. There is no need to change the tracks so much when you have such high level of safety in the cars. So I totaly agree with you here coldtyre.

shut up kals, they have put it on the only place on the circuit where it was not needed, after the race this topic will be one big complain about DRS making it too easy. And everyone will be right.
