Well to be fair they do have a lot more information then we do.

Besides, Vettels comments pretty much told everyone he wasn't forced off.

I've seen a lot of those overtakes in the past here, so it's strange Vettel now got penalised. I've seen a lot of drivers today who gain advantage by driving outside the road who aren't penalised.

And Jensons comments told everybody he ran him off, which just this week was clarified as illegal - which is why I mean this is a dangerous decision. One minute they're told you can't do what Jenson did, then when it happens nothing is done. So it's another rule they are only going to enforce when it suits them.

And as pointed out by Brundle, every other series allows it, F1 allows it, then suddenly it's a penalty.

But is that rule for coming out of corners as well or just for straights, breaking areas?

We had the shitstorm when Kimi prevented Force India from taking a win already. With all the tarmac areas nowadays drivers need to learn a lesson and don't go there to get better traction. This would have never happened with the old gravel traps.

So the best way to teach them not to do it is to ignore there own rules and blindly penalise a move which has been ok until today without warning?

This entire thing stinks of the FIA making it up as they go along. And whilst this forum loves that Vettel just got penalised, wait till it advantages him one day and they'll be tears over the inconsistency.

I think that a 20 second penalty dropping him to 5th for such a minor infraction just seems overly harsh.

I think simply swapping the places round would have been sufficient.

It's F1. Everyone is trying to bend the rules both on and off the track. If Button passed Vettel and got a penalty I'd have said the same. I hated when Fischella got robbed of the victory at Spa and I don't even like the guy

It's pretty unbelievable that they didn't bring out the safety car for Massa's debris. :? That was quite frankly, ridiculous.

This.

And even Martin Brundle contradicted himself when he was analysing the incident. He said he'd seen it happen over and over again in the past, in F1 and in other series and it hadn't warranted a penalty. But Vettel had to be penalised. It's not often I disagree with Martin but this was a stinker of a comment.

FIA

Thats just ridicoulus. If Vettel would have stayed on Track and they collided the FIA would have penalised Vettel or Button also.So whatever Vettel had done it would have been the wrong Decision!!

I was also surprised that they didn't as they usually do for those kinds of things. Another inconsistency...

Reason "Self Explanatory"

Great advantage to accelerate on kerbs and painted tarmac... *HIRN-PAUL-SMILIE-HERE*

They would have done that if Vettel was 20s in front of the others.

That's common sense. Wasn't there an equally stupid penalty when Schumacher(?) overtook someone at Monaco when the safety car pulled in on the last lap? I don't see why they don't just reverse the places.

I still think it's the correct decision. Vettel should have made an effort to go around the outside, whilst staying on the track. If Button then continued to move over, take to the run off.

Did Vettel gain an advantage by going off the track? Yes. He was able to get on the power sooner, straighten the wheel sooner, and get a far better corner exit than Button. Who's to say that Button wouldn't have left more room if he saw Vettel to his left, still within the circuit limits?

Giving a "Self explanatory" as the reason for the penalty is just arrogant behaviour from the stewards, if you ask me. What is actually the self explanatory part of the incident? Sure the Fact, Offence and Decision parts explain a lot, but they could have been more politically correct with their reasoning. We've seen similar overtaking manouvers where penalties have not been given. Were those incidents called "self explanatory" also?

It just reminds Red Bull they don't owe F1 just yet ;)

To be fair: what other or more precise explanation do you expect for the fact that a driver left the circuit and gained an advantage!?
