Rosberg has what I call the 'Nick Heidfeld syndrome'. Usually there, gathers points and is a very good racing driver. But a lack of aggression or flare or media attention means he tends to go unnoticed.

Go to http://www.formula1.com/results/season/ ... popup.html and click Weather/Speed

IIRC, the Speed Trap is at the top of the hill at Raidillon. How could Bad-doer achieve such a high speed there ? That's qualifying ! Was he running no wing at all so the speed loss through the hill would still elave him with a super top speed, to only brake earlier (hence the 328 kph recorded at S1) ? But his recorded speed is more normal during the race. So I can't explain how he had such a high speed during qualifying. If anyone has an answer, please tell us :p

I bet Rosberg would be dynamite in a top line sportscar team.

Oh yes, I can certainly imagine him lapping those consistent and clean laps at La Sarthe 8)

I bet Rosberg would be dynamite in a Red Bull, McLaren or perhaps Ferrari.

I don't think that. I think he is mediocre. Not a top driver like Hamilton , Alonso and Vettel.

Everyone's opinions of Rosberg are based on multiple seasons in mediocre Williams and a couple of seasons in mediocre Mercedes. In those years he's given us glimpses of great speed but unfortunately the equipment has not aided the perception of his talent.

Now lets flip it over. Let's say Jenson stayed with Mercedes and Rosberg had he been in a Red Bull, McLaren or Ferrari. Everyone would have been saying how mediocre Jenson really was and how he was lucky to have taken his 2009 title. Where as Rosberg have won multiple races and probably competed for a title, and it's unlikely anyone would have called him mediocre.

What I'm trying to say is, the perception of his talent and your opinion that he's mediocre is really only based on the cars he's driven.

Button is likely not as fast as Alonso/Vettel/Hamilton/Raikkonen. But I think he is still far above average.

I wouldn't call him mediocre. Mediocre to me is someone like Trulli, Fisichella, Kovalainen,...

Lol. I love people's use of word mediocre. None of the drivers mentioned so far are anywhere near mediocre. Mediocre (in F1 terms) is someone like Mazzacane, Karthikeyen, maybe even Petrov (even that's probably a little unfair).

Trulli, Fisi and Kovalainen mediocre? Do me a favour. Those are great drivers, just not been able to deliver on the promise they once showed. And one of those drivers could still be great as he'd highly regarded in the current F1 paddock.

It depends what your definition of mediocre is. Maybe the correct naming would be "average". In F1 terms that is. Solid drivers, but nothing more.

To me Karthikeyan & co are just crap.

Mediocre is average yes, but none of those drivers are that. Calling them average / mediocre is laughable.

Of course they're average. They're practically the definition of the word average. They run around the midfield most of the time. In Trullis case he threw in a great drive every so often, then was average the rest of it. Mazzacane wasn't average, he was below average. Pretty far below it.

I think Rosberg is on the same level like Trulli, Kovalainen e.g.
I have never seen hem doing anything special in a car.
He was poor against Webber in his debut year. Could happen. But next years it wasn't really great, but it was helped by poor teammates like Wurz and Nakajima. I don't see any progression in his career. Now, he is complety beaten by a 43 old guy. I want to see Rosberg against Hamilton, Alonso or Vettel. I don't think he will beat them.

That's all such a joke.

They may not be the same level as Vettel, Alonso or Hamilton but that doesn't mean they are average. They've all achieved reasonable success in their careers but not enough to rate at the top level.

I'm ending my participation in the discussion here, as it seems some of you have unrealistically high expectations of drivers that appear in F1.

It's a hard call. I certainly thought that Fisi had a bit more about him than Trulli or Heikki have, but not that I've really got time, they'd be floating around #100-#150 of my top drivers of all time. Since there's been 700 drivers or so, taking out those that solely competed in the Indy 500, is someone 15-20%. Certainly, it could be argued that it has a very long tail and that the talent of the grid is perhaps exponential rather than a normal curve and that despite being relatively highly ranked in total, you're pretty middling in terms of talent differential from the best to the worst.

I'd probably call Fisi good and Trulli and Heikki above average.

Exceptional drivers are guys like Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel.
Then you have very good drivers like Button, Webber, Rosberg and many others. On their day, brilliant.
Then the rest are good.

"Average" F1 drivers are still competent racing drivers. Karthikeyan has fared well in junior series and he's seen as the least capable in F1.

It has already been specified that this is in F1 terms. There is no doubt that every driver who gets into F1 is a very good driver overall. But in F1 terms, Trulli is average. He is average in that he preformed averagely whilst in F1.
