This Trulli/Hamilton situation I actually I think turning into quite an interesting incident.

We've had videos posted showing Hamilton's passing which shows that he's perfectly in the right to take Trulli's position so that's not really under discussion. However the interesting part of it occurs next.

Quote:
However, speaking as he emerged from parc ferme, Lewis told SPEEDtv.com: ‘I was behind Trulli under the safety car, and clearly you’re not allowed to overtake under the safety car. But he went off in the second to last corner, he went wide on the grass, I guess his tyres were cold. And I was forced to go by. I slowed down as much as I could. I was told to let him back past, but I mean... I don’t know if that’s the regulations, and if it isn’t, then I should have really had third.’

So, in a media interview immediately after leaving parc ferme, Hamilton slows down and admits he let's Trulli past, which in the same article claims that it was thrown out because Trulli's story didn't hold. However Trulli's story is that Hamilton appeared to let him past, which appears to be the same as Hamilton's story initially was. Does that mean that Hamilton has been economical with the truth in the steward's office?

So, I've added three options as to what you think the right result should be.

It's a tough one... maybe the FIA should add it to their list of rules which need clarifying.

The only thing I'm certain of is that Trulli definitely doesn't deserve to be dropped to 12th. It's obvious he wasn't intentionally or knowingly cheating, so to move him down so far is unbelievably harsh.

If Lewis waved him through, what was Trulli supposed to do then?

Braking even harder not to overtake Lewis and causing an accident perhaps further back?

Mclaren clearly told Hamilton to let Trulli pass because they didn't realize Lewis was perfectly legit to take 3rd place.... than they realize THEIR error and went to the stewards claiming a penalty for Iarno. Very fair move indeed.... :yuk:

Regardless of the stewards' decision, it should've been either Hamilton 3rd / Trulli 4th or Trulli 3rd / Hamilton 4th. A 25 second penalty was overkill. Hopefullly it will be appealed, that's a 6 point penalty to Toyota.

+1

The 25 second penalty is ridiculously draconian, especially under the safety car finish. The race was frozen at the point the incident occurred so it cannot be argued that Trulli repassing Hamilton prevented the cars behind from overtaking him,

I was hoping there'd be an on-board from either car by now to help clear this up....

As it is, I think Trulli should be 4th, but the FIA love their penalites...and have been particularly harsh to Toyota more than any other team this weekend, so you have to wonder why this is...

It's Trulli retaking the position that we all want to see.

25 sec penalty as the law states. We can't have dynamic penalties for every different circumstance.

Anyway according italian press Trulli was furious when left the circuit, he admitted his error stating he had almost no more brakes and that caused his error but he says Hamilton slowed down and moved to the right in the straight, Iarno so did the same, Lewis slowed more so Trulli finally overtook him again.

Explain me why this deserve a penalty... I really hope a spectator video comes out soon.

There is no solid evidence backing any of that up.

Just read that Hamilton let pass Trulli take take back 3th position! After Trulli made a brake mistake, hamilton overtook him. Mclaren said on the radio to let pass Trulli. That's the reason why Hamilton drove so slowly so Trulli could overtake him.

He deserved 3rd, but should of been 4th, but i dont think he should be penalised because Hamilton/Mclaren did let him go by again, and trulli could do nothing about it really, but the FIA have to give very dramatic penaltys just to wreak the sport even more...

Totally agree.

Yes, I agree completely. Seems harsh on Trulli now, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Although I notice from the vote that 90% of the forum think otherwise!

The fact that Hamilton has confirmed that he slowed down to let Trulli retake him would rather suggest it did happen.

Even if Toyota don't win the appeal, prehaps this might cause the FIA to sort out a better procedure for when things like this happen - it really should have been dealt with by race control over the team infomation screens before the race finished.
