problem in F1: money

good and experienced drivers: very expensive

bad but popular drivers with huge sponsorship: bring in money

that's why Minardi and Jordan had such crap drivers, because they could use their money to survive ;)

There not crap drivers, there also at those teams because teams like Jordan and Minardi also look out for young talented drivers, and with some money it can get them a seat to prove themself in F1. With better teams, it's much harder to get a seat.

Yes, but most of the drivers didn't proved themselves in the minor series. They should at least be dominant or a consistant race winner in a feeder series in order to be able to get a F1 opportunity.

I wouldn't be surprised if Danica becomes USF1 official driver. OK, she isn't a superb driver, but as some people have pointed, her presence would be great for sponsorship. Don't forget a lot of drivers have been driving a F1-car without having any special skill: Yuji Ide, Christian Albers, Narain Khartikeyan and many Minardi drivers in the last years.

This kind of mindset is what sets apart the teams at the front of the grid and those at the back. If USF1 seriously want to be up the front, they'd take someone on the basis of their skill and potential to win races/championship(s) - thus bringing the needed credibility and appeal for further sponsorship. Whereas if you rely on just the name Danica Patrick to effectively bankroll the team, it's a risky ploy. What would happen should she leave the team? Is she any good to begin with? Would USF1 even be in a position to race competitively knowing they have a driver not punching above everyone else?

She might prove to be a brilliant grand prix racer for all I know. But if her stats so far are a guide, I'd look elsewhere.

They could do what Arrows did in 1997.

Hire one expensive good driver and one driver that brings in the cash.

+1. It's almost impossible for a new team to be competitive in its first year, so they can give Danica Patrick one of the seats (just to make money with sponsors) and the other seat hired to a good river.

I seem to remember that there was a lot of n00bery with most of the drivers on that day? Hence Patrick moving up to 2nd.
True, she had been running in 5th place but then Rice ran out of fuel from 2nd, Dixon spun from 3rd & was hit by Dario who was 4th, Danica avoided the mess & moved to 2nd which is where she finished.

She was much more lower down at some point before someone punted off Castroneves at the first corner.

Anyway, it is all about generating PR, whether if Patrick is good or because she is a female driver.

Tony Kanaan could be one good option for the other seat, but if they're looking for american drivers, that'll be more difficult

Could you pop that on a t-shirt? I'd buy it...and then use it as a chammy. Gawd, Danica in F1, what rot...

- how about Graham Rahal? I'd rate him above Marco A, who hasn't exactly acquitted himself well in A1GP...

Rahal is a good one, but he might need some experience. The team would be great if they hire someone as test driver (Rubens Barrichello, if he don't get a seat) to help with development of both drivers and cars

Have they considered Jonathan Summerton?

He'd be the safest choice, in my opinion.

He was certainly very impressive in A1GP, but I'd question whether he's experienced enough for F1 at this stage.

Who would be a good Team mate for Danica assuming she gets the drive?

The Team won't be quick so they will need a steady experienced and and quick driver and that would be Rubins or button in my opinion.

I reckon he'd be a quick learner.

No one has thought it is a possibility that this "we'd love to test Danica" was just polite talk and nothing more? "We're never going to test that b*tch" probably wouldn't have been good PR.

Aye, exactly. What odds that when the project gets off the ground a certain NASCAR driver called Dale gets a test invitation?

IMO, that would be the only way for the project to have any mainstream credibility in the States, sadly. They'd have to do that.
