Has there ever been such a rule? This year in F2 you lose your best time if you cause a red flag. Then again, race director might wait to allow a car to continue, so it's not always driver's fault if there's a red flag.

So this is the wording in the regs.

“any driver whose car stops on the track during the qualifying session or the sprint qualifying session shootout will not be permitted to take any further part in that session”. Annnnndddddd in pure FIA dumbshittery, stopping the car is not defined. Sainz's car stopped, for quite a while, caused a red flag because of a crash, but could eventually drive away. That action is not defined in the regs. Seems like it is captain obvious material. But apparently not.

Why am I not surprised.

Aston have protested the results based on this regulation.

Rejected.

Aston Martin; not a very likeable bunch are they? Who would have thought building an entire team around nepotism would generate such a toxic group of people.

Aston is also one of the fiercest opponents of Andretti joining in

about Sainz, he damaged his car and no one else lost time so no reason to apply a penalty

Red flag or no red flag also depends on how quickly the race director drops it. And then he can give the driver that he likes, a couple of seconds more time to recover and get going again.

After reading that summary....I am actually in the camp that Sainz should have been excluded. The argument is two fold. What constituites stopping, and how have the rules been applied before? Sainz was stationary for 1 minute and 17 seconds after HE CRASHED, causing a Red Flag. It was not because of mitigating circumstances and he got a box full of neutrals and had to reset the car. There were drivers on a fast lap that had to be aborted because of his crash.

Under the current wording, stopping for 1 minute and 17 seconds after you have crashed causing a Red Flag sure does constitute stopping on track for me.

And the argument for past incidents just boils it down to, well we haven't penalised it in the past, so why now? I'm not sure what examples they cited, but off the top of my head, crashing, causing a Red Flag and being stationary for 1 minute and 17 seconds wasn't one of them.

So now, technically, someone can bin it, cause a Red Flag, be stationary for 5 minutes, refuse to get out of the car, then some how magically get their car up and running without assistance, make it back to the pits and be free to resume the session, stopping the session for more than 10 minutes, and that isn't considered to be "stopping on track"???

He was on the grass, so technically not stopped on track
