Perez is making Mark Webber's 2011 and 2013 seasons look great by comparison.

webbsy made is very telling. The common point between these two drivers is that they were both very experienced, rock-solid mentally, and fast enough to rack up victories and podiums (even a title in the case of Webber). Then, they went through the meat-grinder that is the second seat next to RedBull's wonderboy of the time.

It's interesting when you look at the number of 1-2s.
For Max-Perez: 11
Vettel-Webber: 16
Hamilton-Bottas: 21
Hamilton-Rosberg: 30

Mercedes was arguably more dominant than Red Bull, but I think it's clear Hamilton-Rosberg pair was strongest and Max-Perez weakest (unless Perez 2.0 somehow emerges next year).

yeah I was checking his results on F3000 after he stepped down from driving and switched to principal. His first years were a big struggle having to develop the team with russian money (and an unknown Viktor Maslov at the wheel). But a couple of years later they were running the show despite the series weakening

I think the easy rule would be that driver who is enough laps down to not be classified even with finishing the race from that moment onwards would not be allowed to resume the race. Which is Suzuka would be seven laps.

Perez was 26 laps down.

I know one case where driver jumped out of the car during the race, returned and still finished in the points. That was Martin Brundle in Monaco 1989. The battery of his car needed to be changed and they could only do that if the driver was not on his seat.

that was in times when anything goes, whole different scenario

today they sell F1 as an immaculate display of professionalism even though they drift far away from that

It was Brazil 1996 where it was raining heavily, Barrichello had to pit to retire, but they fixed the car and Barrichello could rejoin the race.
He later said that the worst part was getting himself into his soaking wet overalls again, which means he had already changed into normal clothes
