on the final laps Norris was breaching track limits on alternative laps, funny nobody on the booth noticed that

That's what's most frustrating about it, it's not a blanket "everyone who breaks track limits gets a penalty" it's still enforced haphazardly so one driver will cop a penalty but another doing the same thing won't

Norris was on a B/W flag and then a few laps later the broadcast specifically replayed him going over the line again at the final corner (not quite sure why the FOM was trying to create penalties for some drivers but not others, but that's another point) and nothing from the stewards...

It's policed by marshals reporting track limits at their corner, so they could either easily get overwhelmed and miss a few instances while reporting others, or even more cynically, deliberately not report their favourite driver and make sure one they don't like gets every single instance reported immediately, so it's not a fair system

It's getting to the point the entire world of motorsport is getting blighted by this atm, or at least all FIA mandated series. Addison talks more about track limits than anything else during Touring Car meetings these days, Sportscar and junior single seater races seem to be constantly having penalties dished out too

It's time the entire sport looked at this track limits issue and see if it's the way they want to go. Do we want great side by side racing then made irrelevant because one of them crossed a white line slightly while racing hard for position? Or do we just want to fix our race tracks with grass and gravel so that this track limit thing is sorted out naturally by the fact that if you put a wheel off the course, you're LOSING time instead of potentially gaining some?

If the Perez and Sainz battle today had caused a track limits violation penalty, I'd have thrown my tea at the screen, I swear.
THAT's why I watch this sport, not to have people racing closely on track but be metaphorically 5/10 seconds apart from each other due to penalties.

Just put a strip of grass in the way like they have at some parts of Silverstone, problem sorted.

FIA says that there's about 1200 possible instances of track limits violations so the final results may take a while.

They also said they'll insist with the track to add gravel traps in the exits of 9 and 10.

Needs more Balestre-esque "Have some gravel traps, you useless tossers. Don't whine when you beach yourself every other lap now." imo

All they have to do is allow outside assistance, then beaching it in the gravel doesn't mean an automatic retirement.

Results are set to change. Guess FIA will have to review those 1200 breaches after all.

Sainz drops to 6th, Hamilton drops behind Russell and Gasly drops behind Stroll.

Ocons penalty was that ridiculous he's only just finished the race.

This race NEEDED Martin Brundle to raise a wry eyebrow at all of this nonsense and say something like

"There's more penalties out there today than an England world cup semi final!" or something

I'm just anticipating the day when 80 seconds post-race penalties will put cars one lap down. :D

I think the rules are clear. And it might seem ridiculous to give so many penalties during and after the race, but they were warned in qualifying.

If you´re driving so fast that you can´t keep the car within the limits of the track, drive slower. In Monaco, they can survive the race without going over the track limits, why can´t they do it here.

That sorta attitude only really works when there's a couple of drivers doing it, not about 2/3rds of the field on multiple occasions

They can't see the white lines from their seating position is the main issue I'd imagine, so it needs to be up to the track to ensure they can't take any advantage, you know, like in the good old days when it was impossible to go over track limits.

The season in itself is already terrible. Then, race direction decides to be worse than the season itself. First the redflagfest in Australia. And now they got exposed by being unable to enforce their own rules in a timely manner.

Well, they really need to automate the penalties. Do them on practice so drivers know where they can go. Just give a review when it's to avoid a crash.

Also gravel!
