It would only make sense if Wittich was watching the same feed as we. But that's not the case. He's got dozens of angles where to see Stroll's car. You could see it from other drivers' onboards. Though I admit that from his onboard it wasn't 100% clear whether or not the back of the car was behind the barrier, thanks to the tractor and marshals blocking the way. But even then it would take only a few seconds to push the car under yellows or VSC.

Indeed, but I prefer this on F1 than VSC almost anytime.

lol, initially I thought they made a correct call given how Goatifi crashed there last year and his car swinged into that opening.

A VSC would suffice, but generally we love full SC, we're just unlucky here it favored the dominating driver

now that results have been official, time for our beloved stats

-5th win for Sergio Pérez
.Overall rank 55 (overtakes legends as Dan Gurney and Bruce McLaren)
.7th win for a mexican driver (equals Switzerland and Colombia)
.4th win in a street course, 3rd win in a night race

-100th podium finish for Fernando Alonso (6th overall)
.117th podium for a Spanish driver, 10th best overall (one less than Austria)

-1st front row start for Aston Martin in almost 64 years (Roy Salvadori started 2nd in Aintree 1959)

I guess is all that interesting enough for now

another thing worth mentioning was the reason for why officials called SC for an incident that wasn't a big concern

they claimed that they "couldn't see where the car was stopped". Utter bollocks I might say

I heard on an F1 podcast recapping the race that race control make their FCY decisions based on car sensors and whether a stationary sensor is anywhere on the live circuit. So because Stroll's car wasn't completely off the track they triggered the FCY. This sounds like complete bullshit to me, but has anyone else heard this?

How should that incident warrant a safety car but Sutil in the middle of the track at Hockenheim back in 2014 did not

Because in between now and then Jules Bianchi headbutted a tractor?

Wasn't there also pretty-near universal condemnation of that decision at the time? I am sure we all criticised it as it happened.

funny that indycar is doing the same shit on their road courses, only throwing cautions after the leaders went to the pits. But at least they are throwing the caution, that one with Sutil they didn't even bothered, it was 80's F1 in 2014

I don't think I've ever been as angry about anything during an F1 race as that. And also the time in Nurburgring when a Manor caught fire and they only threw the SC when it started rolling backwards down the track
Marshals were expected to deal with the fire under green....

Ditto the time in Korea when Webber's Red Bull was on fire right in the line of fire in the runoff at the end of the long straight. No SC until a fire truck took it upon itself to go on track illegally without permission

Charlie's problem was he came from an era that had a belief that the race must remain pure at all costs, and the SC was an artificial invention to spice up the racing that those uncooth american series used and must be minimised in F1 wherever possible

Just as frustrating but at completely the opposite end of the spectrum, purism to the point of dangerous vs manipulated in the name of entertainment

If only there was a middle ground. :slaphead:

In hindsight, it's hugely ironic that Whiting - once he decided the SC was necessary - had absolutely no problem with ending the race behind it. There's no way he would have been pressured by Christian and Toto.

Then again, I wonder if they would have even spoken to him like that...

would Charlie be pressured by netflix? :p

I wonder if they started shooting DTS while Bernie was at charge, he'd be the one who steals the show
