WEC in Spa without tyre warmers was extremely dangerous.

Ima say the best drivers in the world should be able to handle cold tires for a lap.

Apparantly it's also Pirelli advocating against it because it will kill the undercut.

To be fair, the temperatures at Spa were below average, wasn't it close to 0C?

Yeah it was really cold. Plus drivers too used to help from tyre blankets.

When did F1 start using tyre blankets?

And the tyres are designed to be pre-warmed anyway.

A good question I struggled to find an answer for. As we know them, probably since the mid-80's and not just duvets over the tyres.

then you see the problem relies more on teams, drivers and Pirelli not wanting to stop to use rather than lack of safety overall

plus is quite weird the so called "best drivers in the world" having to rely on tire warmers like a child having to rely on attached wheels on their bikes until they learn to ride without it

Apparently first time they used blankets at 1974 Canadian Grand Prix. Officially they were introduced in F1 in 1985.

It was 6 to 10 degrees. And if you were a regular Spa visitor, you´d know that unfortunately, that´s not below average. Dammit, I´ve been cold there! And wet!

Anyway, yes, it was a cold day. But the speed difference at which even the hypercars were crawling up Raidillon in their out lap, compared with cars on warm tyres, was immense.

Maybe we could just have tyre warmers to 20 degrees or so as a middle ground? Maybe do that for a few years whilst everyone gets used to them?

And after those few extra years FIA can say " ok, we gave you a few extra years with tyre warmers. From now on, all tyres will be stored in a freezer -10°c before being put on the car to balance out the extra heat we gave you these last few years"

I think 1981 or 1982 was when pitting for fresh warm tyres became a thing, Lotus and Brabham had ovens that they'd store the wheels/tyres in.

I'll be at the Monza GP this year (section 9 secunda variante, assigned seat!), only on Sunday though. Any tips on getting there (Car? Uber? Public Transport?) and at what time (I want to watch all support races aswell obv.

I can't say much since I was there few weeks ago just on normal day, but public transport was very good imo. Bought ticket called "io viaggio ovunque in lombardia" which allowed me to use most of the public transport on just one ticket. Metro, bus, regional trains. So I arrived by train on Monza station and then had one bus to "Via Battisti Via 4 Novembre (Vedano al Lambro)" station and then by walk through Via Enzo Ferrari. But not sure how it works during racing weekends

How would it kill the undercut? Both the undercutter and the non-undercutter would come out of the pits on cold tires. The whole idea of undercutting is to get on fresher tires quicker than the other guy, which would still play out.

The non-undercutter would still be out on track longer with worn tires and then be at a disadvantage to the undercutter who's not only on fresher tires sooner but has his new tires warmed up by then.

How can you undercut if you tires are not up to temperature?
The only strat would be the overcut.

It’s the same for everybody, so the undercut would work in the same way, it would only not work if the second car to pit had tyre warmers. If anything not having tyres in blankets would set the men from the boys and we’d really be able to see who can switch the tyres on best or drive best on cold tyres.

The question you should ask, is who supplies the tyre blankets, then you’ll find your answer as to why some don’t want the ban and others do.

Might have changed since I went in 2013 but then public transport was absolutely fine to get to the track. I think we got a train to Monza station then walked the rest of the way but distance wasn't excessive
