OK, I suppose one or two are fine because they would be somewhat unique.

But not 6.

One of them could be unique if held in daylight.

Yeah, Jeddah would be better during the day with the view just by the sea, don't see any of that at night

Agreed, it's taking the piss a little bit

Villeneuve, Melbourne '01 counts right?

Yes, good point. At least some of the car hit the fence, unfortunately enough for Graham Beveridge.

I think that's the only one with footage.

For unseen accidents, I think Pedro Lamy's Silvestone testing crash in 1994 counts.

There are probably other testing accidents which are either forgotten or don't have enough details to know what happened.

And of course there's the fatal accident of Gilles Villeneuve...

IIRC, Lamy actually completely cleared the fence!

Surely things will improve under this guy!

(obviously the FIA does not lead commercial agreements with tracks, but y'know, cheap lulz)

 Now you're just being cheikhy ( 8) )

Formula E did a much better job with Diriyah. You must feel the country's markers, and especially in a street circuit. Baku did the job too. Otherwise it would be like racing the Monaco GP at the Paul-Ricard circuit, everybody would hate it even more than we already do

Still think a serious accident is waiting to happen (last year's F2 start crash could have happened anywhere, so it not the track's fault). They haven't addressed the problem regarding the speed difference of cars doing a hot lap and those doing their out lap or cool-down lap. We haven't seen modern F1 cars going into the catch fence, so it's difficult to predict how it will end. Well, let's hope for the best.

Yeah, this still seems like an inappropriate track tbh. IIRC they have moved some walls to improve sightlines, but this will also increase speeds through those corners.

Come to think of it, have we *ever* seen an F1 car go into a fence? I'm not sure Barrichello at Imola counts.

Zonta at the Silverstone test in (I think) 2000? Front suspension failure going into Stowe. Not sure if he hit the fence whilst clearing it or just straight up cleared it.

it'd be sweet but Liberty doesn't like the idea of having a race starting 4am pacific time

A formula One car has never really hit debris fence, they’ve either gone over them or bounced off at low speed. If you want to see what happens when a formula one style car hits debris fence at high speed look up the Hitoshi Ogawa / Andrew Gilbert-Scott crash at Suzuka, that’s the closest to an F1 spec car you could get at the time and the fence utterly destroyed the car.

Circuits where it can happen are also relatively new. There's usually a generous grass strip either side of straights, and we used to mostly have short armco or walls.

Rolf Stommelen, Marcos Campos, Viso in GP2 at Magny-Cours, Van Der Drift at Brands in SuperFormula, are all crashes that might have qualified for a fence crash with modern track design (in addition to saving quite a few lives and injuries in the process). But those guys hit concrete walls/steel posts/people instead.

Closer to us, the best example is Conor Daly at Monaco:

The biggest factor for the lack of fence crashes is that people used to be much, much nicer to each other while battling down the straights. With the tendency to impromptu blocking and today's fence-enclosed fast street circuits, it's only a matter of time before we have one IMHO.

One of these 790kg cars would just tear the catch fence to pieces.

is more likely to have pile ups like we saw at Mugello rather than catch fencing

unless someone like Magnussen plays Kovalainen and someone coming from behing plays Webber. That crash in a track like Jeddah or Marina Bay could be something very frightening

Villeneuve's crash, the larger part of the actual car hit the top of the barrier, not really the fence. The wheels, suspension parts, etc hit the fence.

In a crash the likes of which I imagine most of us are envisioning, more a US Indycar oval type accident, I would think the FIA fencing would keep the largest parts of the car within the bounds of the circuit, but the car and fence would both be obliterated.

More than likely such an accident would be the end of the race as the repair and cleanup alone would be quite time consuming.

We can speculate on this all we want. Hopefully we'll never get to find out.

I was chatting to some friends about crashes (specifically chassis-splitting crashes) and remembered Viso's GP2 shunt and went and found a photo. I had no idea he was so close to having a Marco Campos-esque outcome until I saw this image.

McNish Suzuka 2002 would be at this list if there was catchfence behind barriers

Nah he was a full on through-the-barrier rather than over it.

I've been wondering why there has never been a video with a commentary by Allen & Brundle. Didn't ITV air the qualifying?
