More reports coming in now indeed. Anyone else can see DanRic move to alpine this season already and Alonso to AM and vettel early retirement?

I don't think drivers contracts fall under the budget cap?

EDIT: I googled, 98% sure that's correct if the first two links I clicked on are correct.

teams are free to spend on drivers salaries, that's why the spare money is being used to shake the market

You are correct - the FIA are trying to arrange a driver salary cap of $30 million for each team but this is not popular with the drivers.

Let us assume this is correct...

That leaves... What? Lando possibly going to Mercedes if Hamilton hangs it up, which would open a seat at McLaren for Palou, Herta or any of the other 10 drivers they apparently have.

If Lando goes nowhere and it's Piastri and Lando at McLaren in '23, all that nonsense for the Indycar drivers was for naught. Palou will, what? Drive a McLaren Indycar? He surely won't be back at CGR for '23. Keep on the sidelines as a reserve for '24 when Lando leave for Merc?

Did Palou screw himself by trusting a Formula 1 team? Be interesting if he vanishes from all the grids because of this contract craziness.

Iirc that’s also why verstappen signed that ridiculous long contract because his salary wouldn’t count towards that since it was signed before the cap would go into effect

Have a read of this interview with Laurent Rossi. Not surprising at all Alpine have ended up like this. This mess was glaringly obvious back in May, even to him.

We truly are in the era of overinflated hype and internet drama.
The kid never set a time in an official F1 session, and with the drama surrounding him you'd think it's Hamilton being bought around. All the while a solid driver like Ricciardo, who's demonstrated many times in the past what he can do in a proper race car in a proper team, is treated like the last trashcan in the paddock. Everyone in F1 needs to keep some perspective.

Yeah for sure. I wonder if part of this is due to Zak Brown feeling the heat and trying to salvage his job. McLaren have obviously regressed this year. And with Ricciardo's struggles, I wonder if they're getting desperate about getting left behind in the mid-pack and feel the need to go out and acquire some "hot shot" driver that will miraculously drag them up the order, or at the very least prolong Brown's dismissal.

Piastri has no experience, he has 5 wins in F2, he isn't so dominant that so much mess and hype should be around him.

I'd like to see Ricciardo have another chance in F1 next season. Things really haven't worked for him at Mclaren, but his career was solid before then. He could have a few more good years left, in the right team.

Not sure about Piastri. He's obviously done very well in the junior formulas. I don't remember many standout performances. Just seemed to rack up consistent finishes. He certainly deserves a chance, though. It didn't take him several years to become a front runner.

F2 has been a bit like this recently. I can't work out if it's a weak field and no one is shining, or it's a strong field and it's hard to shine.

For the moment, I have a hard time trying to agree with that.

I see Piastri's drama comparable to what happened to Schumacher in 1991 when Benetton poached him from Jordan in quite a controversial way.

As per Ricciardo, I see his outing from McLaren comparable to Kimi leaving Ferrari in 2009. Perhaps both drivers deserved a bit more of respect, but both are expensive and underperforming at such a moment.

That's fair EAS.

So anyway, is it confirmed? Nobody posted anything here yet

No-one's said anything on the record, but no-one has denied anything in Rencken's report (or anyone else's) either. McLaren are reportedly working to try and smooth Ricciardo's path to Alpine and won't announce anything until that has been completed.

All of this debacle is the exact reason why we need another team on the grid. The irony is hilarious. McLaren were one of the teams pushing really hard to have the non refundable $200 million dollar fee in place. Now it looks like they might have to pony up that $20 million to Ricciardo lol.

F1 kicking own goals since forever.

To be honest it’s getting a bit annoying on the interwebs how DR fans act like McLaren is the villain in all this.
Where was that energy when mazepin got canned? Oh yeah, he wasn’t a likable chap so it was justified.

I like DR as much as the next guy but if you purely look at the driver DR, McLaren is right to explore other options

An 8-time GP winner with a fan-friendly personality against an ogilarch's son with the personality of an egg who was as slow as he was crash-prone: an extremely valid comparison.

the problem is that McLaren didn't built a car suited to Danny's style, and for about 10 years they're doing as many blunders as Ferrari, so joke on them
