On the same day Binotto leaves Ferrari, the board of Juventus steps down under suspction of fraud.

Why I'm telling this? Because among the quitters is the CEO, who happens to be Maurizio Arrivabene.

Sports never attracted more new fans, that´s true. That´s because they are better in advertising their shit, not in improving it.

haha italian football at its finest. Interesting to see that Juve is still under tight control of Elkann and is also in a big slump recently. Not a coincidence I must say

It's not the drivers - look at the talent that's gone through Ferrari in the last few decades.

How MSC and Kimi won with that team is a mystery really.

Stability, they more or less had the same team/management from 1996 till late 2000's. And ironically part of Binotto's pledge was to get rid of the fear culture and bring stability but it seems as if he's the one that's been on the receiving end of that very thing. And Ferrari have no real replacement lined up.... so ya they def aren't learning their lessons

Ferrari was a well oiled machine under Todt and Brawn, especially in the early-mid 00's. I don't know if Di Montezemolo being a more present figure helped in that as well.

I have been awake since 1am to watch the world cup, but fuck it, I'm going to give a controversial opinion no-one asked for.

Ferrari are probably the most overrated sporting organization in modern sports history. Outside of the Schumacher era they've only won 1 drivers championship since 1981, which, let's be honest, they fluked (2007).

I know that's making stats bend for my argument but still, outside of the years of 00-04 they've achieved fuck all in the sport. They've chewed up and spat out so many personnel and drivers, maybe it's their organization that's the issue?

That's a discussion we've held many times before on this forum. There's no clear solution, but most people will agree that it's not good.
Started to write a long post, deleted everything again, summary is that F1 is focused on quantity because that's more money, and not on quality. Having 16 races per season dominated by 1 team is bad, having 24 races will not change the dominating factor of that same team. And dropping good tracks because terrible tracks pay more, is also bad.

That isn't controversial at all, that is pretty much fact. The controversial aspect is, that for pretty much the whole of that time they have been getting extra "historical" compensation to the tune of $100 million a year. And they have STILL fucked everything up with that extra $100 million. But pour one out for poor old Ferrari. It is now only getting $35 million a year extra.

Portimão is in the fray to replace China. Decision should be announced at the WMSC next week.

you're quite right, I've read Enzo Ferrari's biography recently and they make it clearly that about 95% of their success is due to staying in the sport while competition went away. The only execeptions were in the 70's (much because of Lauda and Montezemolo) and the Schumacher era (much because of Todt, Brawn and Byrne plus the all the testing they could do).

and Portimão with those new cars might look interesting, I hope I'm not wrong

I can't speak for him, but here's something I wouldn't do.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

I like the idea of active aero (whatever you think about DRS, it does kinda look, fighter plane cool to have a flap opening on the cars for extra speed), but not to keep the leader held back so the rest of the pack can attack them, then people will deliberately not want to be in the lead to save fuel like they do in oval racing in america and races will just be everyone backing off trying hard not to lead until the final lap....

Or they can adopt Indycars approach to levelling the field by having endless safety cars for the most minuscule of reasons.

We are already halfway there. Just look at the number of Red Flags we get nowdays. Since 2020 there have been 14 Red Flags. From 2000 till 2017 there were 19 that covered a 17 year period. 4 of which came in 2016.

Arguably (well imo) F1 was at it's most exciting when they used to be more liberal with safety cars.

They don't need to take the piss and throw a safety car when a marshall farts, but they could throw them more instead of using VSC's.

Yeah, from fatal accidents we're heading to the new normal where red flag is shown for purely entertainment reasons.

I was already afraid after Monza headlines that they would start red flagging races from now on whenever there's an incident less than 10 laps to go (not realizing restarts breeds more incidents). Or after Suzuka they would show red flag every time someone gets into gravel or stops due to a technical issue in wet conditions.

Actually, since we didn't have a wet race after Suzuka, I still don't know whether or not they will red flag wet race if there's a stopped car, even if that would mean 4-5 red flags per race. I guess it remains to be seen. Still waiting slow zones to be implemented.

Plus I think Masi got too comfortable suspending races. Take Hungary 2021 for example. Cleaning the track would have taken max. 10 minutes, since there was no barrier damage. It's better than waiting half an hour for a restart.
