outlaw carbon brakes and make them use steel brakes

There was regular talk about doing this in the late 90s and early 00s, but for some reason everybody doing so forgot that Alex Zanardi actually did use steel brakes for a period in 99 and it didn't make a lot of difference, performance-wise.

Well, Zanardi had no performance whatsoever in 99, so not sure if your point is valid.

perhaps if FIA supplies all teams with just one brand and set a limit on brake cooling to reduce their performance it could work

but of course teams wouldn't respect that and see what happens until we see brake failures and they push for a change again for safety

Well, it didn't make him noticeably slower :whistling:

But yeah, there was a feature on it in Autosport mag at the time, and Patrick Head (I think) noted that they saw almost no difference in brake performance, which surprised them because conventional wisdom said otherwise.

Zanardi's problem was the awful rock hard grooved tyres not brakes

His teammate had the same awful rock hard tyres and scored podiums.

IIRC Zanardi blamed both for his struggles - he couldn't feel the brakes well enough because he was used to the steel brakes used by CART, and the tyres felt like shit compared to the ones used by CART. I mean, probably true in both cases, but has a driver ever been so dominant in one series and so utterly lost in another?

As much as I really liked Zanardi....lets be honest, he was pretty crap in his first stint in F1. Sometimes drivers just click with different categories. Zanardi and F1 didn't.

I'd Zanardi is the last of the oldschool drivers, who could work it great on cars with less tech

Nah, while Zanardi had Ralf Schumacher as teammate, Bourdais had Sebastian Vettel.

Didn't Mansell also deliver a masterclass at Donington in '98 though? IIRC he stormed through from the back, even though he ended up not winning.

Yes, the conditions were very much in the Mondeo's favour at that event.

Every year I wonder if I should take F1TV, but I haven´t done it so far. I read a lot of negative reviews, it appears to often not work properly...

Who here uses it, what are your thoughts? Which options do you use and is it worth it?

I signed because local broadcast is kinda shit and I like to watch without commentary. Feels a lot better

It could have a bit of delay depending on your device, but I watch on the PC and it goes smooth

My opinion: totally recommend it, specially because of the old content they keep uploading
