I wonder what would have happened if this wasn't the last race of the season. Imagine this situation happened during race 5 or so. I think Masi would have taken the same decisions, do everything he can to have the race finish under green and perhaps have a fight between the two drivers that will obviously fight for the title all year. People would have found it a questionable decision, but no way they would have protested the result as hard as they did now. Not all cars had been able to unlap? Who cares. Stupid that Max won the race this way, but hey, that's racing. Next time it will favor Hamilton.

Now imagine Bahrain was the last race of the season. Winner takes the title. You can't leave the track at Turn 4 on Saturday, on Sunday it is allowed (weird decision to begin with) and then that is changed DURING the race. Verstappen overtakes Hamilton on the outside, decides to give it back before he gets a penalty, can't do it again.
People would lose their shit for these decisions, nobody will talk about what happened in Abu Dhabi earlier in the season.

Imagine Silverstone had been the last race. Imagine Spa!

This season has been full of veeeery questionable decisions. What happened in Abu Dhabi is nothing compared to all that happened earlier in the year. If the result of this race has to be reviewed because of a weird decision, then we have to review every decision made this year because there were several that were a lot more over the top. And then you get a completely different season. IMHO one where Max is champion with 2 races to go.

Again IMHO: in 1994 they said about Schumacher that the right man won in the wrong way. I think the same can be said today.

And last IMHO: Mercedes made a lot of mistakes this year, much more than Red Bull did. They blew it on several occasions, and luck helped them more than once to keep the gap as it was. If you look at the Abu Dhabi GP, Hamilton deserved it more. If you look at the entire 2021 season, Verstappen deserved it more. And that's what counts for me.

indeed, Max showed that he deserved, Honda fixed all reliability issues and Red Bull played a masterclass at the pitwall and the pitlane

is not like other racing series that if you can win 10 times in a season and still lose because someone crash you off in the final races, disalloing a shot at the title :whistling:

Did you just inadvertently make the best argument in favour of championship finales in the Middle East?

Did we ever find out why Perez was retired from the race? I guess if the car had a problem creeping in, I can understand Red Bull wouldn't want to risk him breaking down on the final lap, and bringing out a yellow flag or VSC/SC which would've prevented Verstappen from overtaking Hamilton potentially. Just wondered how terminal the problem was, since he was in a podium position after all.

Yeah, its extremely childish and disrespectful to the Formula E team that has no part in this but is being withhold the glory.

I got a feeling that this is mainly because of 1/3th of the owners doesnt agree. Maybe 2/3ths. At this point I could see Mercedes walk away from the team and just stay as an engine manufacturer in F1.

Ultimately, isn't this sport is about image, brand popularity and representation? I don't get how the small loss of prestige from losing the driver's title is worth tarnishing the team's reputation by acting like this.

They aren't even losing anything financially speaking, they got the constructor's title and the prize money that goes with it. Only Lewis lost something here, and seemed to have gotten over it after sitting a couple minutes in his car. Mercedes as a team has more to lose by keep at this behaviour, rather than just sportsmanly accepting this half-defeat, moving on, and gaining new fans and respect potentially.

Actually, winning this legal battle would have awful image repercussions for the team, and taint Hamilton's "8th title".

It's a motor race. Get over it. The fans get it, the drivers get it, any top head getting in this business should get it.

I got a feeling this will end very badly for the Mercedes team.

As you said, Lewis seemed to have gotten over it. Clearly he is sad and he has every right. Anyone would be if they lost the WDC in the last lap. I do think he knows its not on Max that it went down as it went and that he got lucky this season too otherwise Max would already been champion.

I don't think Daimler is too happy with all this. I can see them selling their final 33% and that means they're basically a customer team (real damage will come in 2023 then). Lewis might also reconsider his position. Especially if Mercedes really leaves. And would Ineos still be happy to own 33% if Daimler pulls out of the team?

Bold statement but I dont think the Mercedes AMG team of 2021 will be the same we will see in 2022 (ignoring Bottas leaving and Russel coming in obviously). Something will happen before the first race.

Poor Russell if Mercedes decides to do a shock withdrawal from competition :D

the best possible scenario is that if Hamilton retires

then Russell's (un)luck plays it hard with Mercedes putting the team for sale and some rich mafia man buys it to put his son alongside in a winning car

And would that be Stroll or Mazepin?

most likely Mazepin, but who knows. In Russia alone there are several billionaire daddys wanting to sportswash or do money laundering through motorsports, like italians did until the local police dismantled their operations

If Daimler pulls out of the team it will be Toto and/or Ineos buying their shares.
