I'm going to go waaaaayyyyyy out on a limb here and assume that one of the most prominent sportspeople in the world might not need to make things up to get attention.

Well he has done that in the past and also get caught from lying in front of cameras. Some people might assume that's what he does.

And as much I dislike his pretentious/arrogant behavior, I actually don't think he made that up. He's either concerned about his health, which is what quite big portion of people on this planet has done during the pandemic, especially the people who have caught the virus. That or he actually has long term effects and it might cause more issues.

So, three scenarios and the way I see each of them.

Hamilton has long covid:
- he's taking serious health risks to race, if he wins the title, that will be a big part of the story.
- he might have to step out for a while.
- risk of severe health issues.

Hamilton is worried about his health, but has no long covid after all:
- in the interview he said he believes he might have long covid, so he has not get it checked yet. Maybe first time he had dizziness after race and microphone was at his face already.
- perhaps talk with the doctor first than with media to avoid huge backlash one way or several.

Hamilton made up the story:
- he's seeking attention in disgusting way and should be ashamed. Huge backlash.
- he might still have to step out from racing if doctors or insurance companies demand further evaluations.
- not very likely scenario, because downsides of this could be massive.

I hope he doesn't have long covid or that he made that up to get attention. And most importantly I hope he gets it checked with the doctor and some official statement is given so that we don't have to have stupid tinfoil hat conspiracy theories over this.

edit: conspiracy theory - maybe this is the reason why Russell was testing Mercedes today. :p

I'd wish Mercedes turbos or admission systems could had some form of covid so air doesn't get into their engines and they lose power

Some of the onboards show the total clusterfuck in the pits.

The race direction created a situation where people had to rush to the exit not to lose time in the race (and those idiots also thought they could race and pass each other in the pits in a stunning ignorance of the rules).

But it's all fine we'll wait for a mechanic to die (or more likely, lose a foot ref. the Ferrari demo by Olivier Beretta) before something is done about it. But God forbid a driver gets a scratch!

This situation reminded me that MotoGP race in Argentina which only Jack Miller got the setup right for the weather, and all other drivers would have to start from the pits. But race direction deemed it too dangerous and improvised a buffer for Miller on the grid instead.

A terrible decision from a sporting perspective, but a sensible one from the safety perspective.

We'll have Oscar in a year, maybe two.

Not many, if any (Lewis spent 2 years in F3 and won it on his 2nd attempt), have won the F3 category AND the F2 category, in their first and only years in the competition, he could potentially do that.

He is part of the Renault academy? With them having no other customer in F1, if he does win the title this year there is no place for him to go in F1, if Renault don't loan him out and there are takers for him. He will end up being like Nyck de Vries. Champion with no where to go.

Ocon is locked into Renault and unless Alonso falls off a cliff next year, or really hates next years cars I can't see a place available at Renault for 2023 either.

not an expert, but i think it's possible to have long covid without taking serious health risks. he specifically mentioned his inability to maintain his fitness, which could only wear on him in the most extreme circumstances. it's also possible he's just now realizing he should see a specialist to make sure he doesn't have permanent lung damage or myocarditis from covid.

and if he did know, it wouldn't be the first time a racecar driver raced against the better advice of medical personnel

If Lewis' car had "stalled" when he was the only one on the grid at the restart, the green light in the pitlane would never have come on releasing all the other cars, the FIA would have red flagged it and he would have got to change his tyres.

Mercedes feel free to hire me to join the tactics part of your team, I'll take whatever Valterri's on for a wage.

I think they would have released everyone in the pits once marshal started pushing Lewis to the pits. If there's one car in pitlane and one stalls, I believe the car from pits can go once all the drivers who got going went past.

They gonna avoid wet standing starts again in future aren't they?

This particular edition had one situation which made it very difficult. The track was dry when they made their laps to the grid, and there was no wet running during the earlier weekend either.

The current rules say that drivers would need to use full wets if they start behind safety car. I think that applies also to the situation where they would do multiple warm-up laps and then standing start like Germany 2019.

Kubica is allowed to drive an entire season with one arm, but a driver will get huge backlash if they race with occasional fatigue? Drivers aren't allowed to race when they're a little bit under the weather? Disregarding that this has happened a thousand times already, professional athletes compete in races with injuries and ailments every day.

This is so mind staggeringly stupid to even speculate.

One English driver had a particularly shithouse habit of making really dumb shit up, so I can see where you're coming from, but to say one of the world's most famous athletes is making shit up, for no real reason, is just so dumb.

If you think that's dumb, wait til you hear that Jacques Villeneuve believes that Lance Stroll will drive for Mercedes next year.

You only have to go back to the start of 2014 when they changed the weight limits of the cars and taller and heavier drivers like Jean Eric Vergne were on the verge of passing out from exhaustion at the start of the season.

Oh and if ever there was a driver that Red Bull screwed over it was him. I rated him very highly.
