When was the last time a driver got a drive thru penalty? They used to be pretty common back in the day.

Kimi in literally the last race

OMG, that's a bloody violent crash

Fuck, you hear it barely scraped the gravel twice then a sudden stop. No wonder his audio aftermath was so excruciating, I can't imagine the pain you feel in the chest until you catch your breath back.

I think you're onto something. If it wasn't for the sprint race the day before, I think he'd have naturally tried the outside like he did in sprint.

But given that it doesn't work, and since he knew that overtaking Max on track would be impossible at least in the first stint, he had an urge to pass, decided to force inside, and planned for that move no matter what. You rarely see Hamilton this aggressive.

I really think the sprint race got us all this drama, because from that "rehearsal", they both knew it would be cut-throat for P1 until Becketts :8:

The main thing i say, you have to know what you do in a high speed corner.
You would never stick a wheel inside in Eau Rouge or Radillion, or Turn 8 in Turkey.
You have to take the track position, speed and corners as a responsibility. If it was in the loop, it would be a spin and Max would continue. This was dangerous for the drivers, marshalls and the fans there. And Hamilton stuck the wheel inside, Max left it knowing that is not a place for a overtake.

Stefan Bellof tried in Eau Rouge and we all know how that ended

Another important factor (I just remembered Martin Brundle mentioning it repeatedly years ago!) is that you know which drivers will back off and which ones won't, and this also tells you what you can get away with at which corners. Max Verstappen at Copse is probably not on anybody's list.

The natural penalty for getting it wrong are so high that it sorts itself out. Yesterday was an outlier in just how incredibly lucky Hamilton was: didn't spin out, didn't have terminal damage, then had the benefit of a red flag (only because they needed time to uncharge Max's battery) to not lose time. It's a one in a decade amount of luck.

that's what bugs me off. Looks like is tailour made every time for Mercedes to win, this is a disgrace and there's nothing we can do about it

The more you watch that video, the more you realize just how lucky Max was. If that car had spun around more and struck the front at an angle, there would have been a very real possibility that it could have ripped the monocoque apart from its angle and momentum.

2nd time this season. If he went left in Baku he probably already was a goner.

And neither would be on him

And another thing. Max’ engine is probably a write off too so he has to do 13 races with an engine less. Likely has to take a grid penalty later this year.

Lewis is truly #blessed :yuk:

Everyone got very lucky yesterday... Ignoring everything else, the fact the tire didn't do something silly like clear the catch fence, or, with said tire not on the car, Max's car didn't dig in and clear the catch fence...

There was a lot of luck getting sprinkled around yesterday, not just on Hamilton. Had the unthinkable (though, has happened before) had occurred and Max's car went over or through the fence, the FIA, in my opinion, would have had no other choice but to take the result of the transgression into account when handing down a penalty.

The way it shook out, 10 seconds was probably about right... My personal displeasure comes mostly from Hamilton's brain dead comments after the race.

If the car had gone through or over the fence then there would not be any penalty for Hamilton (at least, not from the stewards), as there would be several dead spectators and the race would be cancelled.

Thing is Mercedes were walking trough a nice sunny park for the last 7 years - no rivals didnt match them,Bottas here and there and thats about it)
Be we wanted a fight and we got it bot not like that, Lewis is really lucky, In Imola he should have been last if Russel and Bottas didnt bring the red flag out, cuz at the time he was 9th with a broken wing, and had to box to loose even more time, and then came the crash and he lost nothing, and could recover to 2nd place. Apsolutley incredible luck.

But i hope his luck will end a bit this year

I was just wondering. How close were we from a Le Mans 55 like stuff yesterday?

In that scenario, yes there would've been no penalty handed down for the cancelled race, but I suspect he would've received a much more severe penalty for Hungary. Such a move would not have gone unpunished.

Imagine him making comments along the same line as he did yesterday in that scenario.

Sadly I can see him being capable of still saying max drives dangerously and hard

Mark Webber tried it there, too, and we saw how that worked out.
