Ignoring the safety side, the chicane is pointless as long as they have DRS. Does it help in any other categories though?

Barcelona has never been a good track for cars since it was built. Long constant radius corners and no hard braking zones. You can't carry a car through these corners and reap the rewards. The longer the corner, the more of an issue aero push becomes.

ah these crashes happened in the straight entrance, I thought they changed because of crashes nearby where Luis Salom had a fatal crash

perhaps they could do it like Fuji and set a slow hairpin to the straight

I think the last corner at Barcelona has already quite generous run-off area. It's no more dangerous than Eau-Rouge, Blachimont, Zandvoort oval, Sochi's third corner or sections at Baku or new Miami track which all have less or no run-off area. IF they return here in the future, ditching the chicane is definitely worth trying.

The problem was never just the size of the run-off (which is mostly generous, as you say), it was more that it ends sharply due to the main grandstand and so there is a section of barrier which, depending on the circumstances, can be hit almost head-on and/or spit cars back onto the track. This is a likely outcome if somebody loses it over the exit kerb.

Given that DRS pretty much guarantees a pass on the following straight, and that we know medium speed corners are the worst for following cars, they might as well ditch the chicane and tighten the final corner itself.

Is the layout of the barriers really that different to the last corners at Bahrain and Shanghai, for example? Thinking specifically of Albon's practice crashes at both tracks, both of which could have spat him back into traffic if they happened in the race

It was.

Lol, there's a car upside down, debris in the corner and the Medical Car is parked right next to the white line, and yet still drivers are racing because of the late SC call.

Still better than infamous ADAC Formel Masters from Sachsenring 2012

Yeah, that was ridiculous. I have wondered that if Bianchi had never had his accident, maybe even today they would recover cars during local yellows. Or maybe there would have been similar situation a few years later, so by 2020 VSC would have been a thing anyway.

Also, it's maybe a good thing that the cars are so reliable as they are now. Races would become unbearable if there were still 10 to 14 retirements per race like 20 years ago. There would be a SC period every 5 laps since cars would conk out every 5 laps. No green racing at all.
