Probably still the best race we'll get today :(

Probably more overtaking than we'll get at Kansas and Texas combined

DRS wasn't as OP as last year.

At least there's that.

Schumacher and Latifi had a nice battle when they weren't being interrupted by blue flags, other than that... :tumble:

Tbh, Verstappen had the faster car (once again) this weekend, and fucked it up. Made mistakes in Qualifying and race (multiple ones), that cost him important points. If you want to win the WDC against Lewis, you have to do better than that.

you need to put grass and gravel on places that drivers take advantage, that is what it must have been done

Maybe, but the rules are the same for everyone.

It's RB's fault that they didn't make the drivers aware of where the track limits are. Max was under the impression there were no limits at T14.

Verstappen might've had the faster car over one lap, but actually Mercedes had the faster car on Sunday and Red Bull just didn't have that little extra to match them (in Verstappen's own words post-race).

I wonder how different the race would have been if Max lap counted. He seemed to have a faster car, but his setup had so much downforce that took away all the top speed he needed to overtake the Mercedes.

And as much as I struggle to take Lucas' posts seriously, I think he might have a point. I don't think FIA deliberately benefits Mercedes, but it's interesting how they end up playing in their favor. And track limits rules aren't exactly consistent this year.

It's more how 9 teams are aware of the directives from the FIA about what corners are being policed for track limits, and somehow red bull seem to miss the directives from the FIA about which corners are being observed and which are not.

You can argue it's bullshit the FIA aren't consistant about such matters, but 9 teams seem to be aware when the FIA send out a statement saying they're policing a particular corner and Red Bull seem to be oblivious

Or maybe it's just Max himself who CBA to read every rules update, I dunno

Red Bull are just having a whinge. They still can't get over that COTA thing.

I think Red Bull is still bitter about Hamilton being allowed to "legally" ignore track limits 29 times in Bahrain. They won't forget about that anytime soon.

Or maybe we only hear about 1 team because it actually had a big impact. Dutch tv mentioned other drivers getting warnings as well for track limits during the race.

During qualifying I was confused as heck because in some corners you can go wide and in others you cant. They NEED to fix this. Make it 100% clear. Enforce it 100% of the times. Or find a way that going over the track limits actually hurts the driver right away.

The fact that Max exceeded track limits wouldn't have been mentionned if he hadn't done it in the lap that turned out to be his and the overall fastest lap of the race. He did not get a time penalty or even a warning for it, that only happens when you do it frequently. The only consequence is that his laptime didn't count. That is very simple and very logical. It turned out that this happened to be his fastest lap, but if Tsunoda or Latifi had done his personal best lap in the race after exceeding track limits, that lap time would also not have been put in records as their personal fastest lap.

One thing that frustrated me is that a few laps he was close at 13 (uphill left hairpin), but would brake too late, go too deep and lose a ton of time at exit. He then would be too far entering 14 (downhill right), where he already had less drive out than the Mercedes. This killed any opportunity to at least hope catching the slipstream. I'm just an armchair driver here and he may have had other reasons, but it seemed clumsy and a product of trying too hard rather than focusing on clean exits.

Anyway, if this is really what a boring F1 race looks and feels like in 2021, sign me up for more. There was a legitimate 3-way battle for the win, no matter how you look at it. And the Perez gamble added some spice to it.

Track limits are clear: the curb (red/white paint) is considered part of the racetrack. You should keep a wheel on there. That's why sometimes it looks like they were going with 4 wheels outside the "track" (white line) but still considered OK. All warnings were for people clearly putting their 4 wheels off the red/white curb. Once you start looking for that, you spot instantly when people are off.
