A shame we don't have the supersoft tyres around anymore. They would match the Aston Martin pink stripe perfectly.

Do we dare to say that McLaren will win a race on merit this season?

I am tempted

one victory for each McLaren driver would be very pleasing

the problem is the Mercedes ahead

If this is their true pace I dont see Alonso sitting out his full contract.

Pretty funny after Abiteboul just appeared in Drive to Survive saying Ricciardo made a mistake

Possibly one of those races where you have ridiculous levels of tire deg and varying strategies.

First time in years that Mercedes wasn’t the fastest in fp1 of the opening race

I hope this Mclaren pace is genuine. Everyone seems to have closed up, except Haas. Hoping Mercedes don't find another second tomorrow.

If this is also truly Mercedes' true pace this season could be very interesting.

McLaren also proofs why for Mercedes it is wise to not supply Red Bull. If they did instead of Honda we'd probably be talking about multiple world champion Verstappen raping the field for the 3rd year in a row.

If practice is remotely representative, we're in for a great season

For once, let's hope it doesn't rain - and tbf it's the right place for a dry race...

If it is, can we safely conclude that using the same car for 2-3 years with minimal upgrades like they did now is a great way to A: increase competition and B: lower costs?

Yes. 2008 is a good example of this too

The great thing is, if this year is close between Red Bull and Mercedes, they'll get drawn into a development arms race for this year in a bid to win the title, which significantly increases the chances of them taking their eye off the ball for the new rules next year. It's a big change from my own previous assumption that Merc would win at a canter again this year and be able to switch attention to next year early again so that they can set themselves up to dominate under the new rules as well

Or that they're willing to sacrifice this year in favour of already focusing on 2022

I doubt it. Mercedes switched attention to 2021 back in August. If they've somehow managed to fuck it up despite giving themselves a huge head start, that's a pretty impressive achievement from the team that everyone says is flawless

I'm still waiting for Hamilton to get pole by 2 seconds and properly destroy any hopes we had of a close season

It is quite a beautiful one indeed. The problem for me is that it really looks like the livery I used at F1 Manager, so it feels like a generic video-game livery.
