How is this the track where Zarco did his MotoGP top speed record of 364kph?

It won't happen in F1

What about Dubai or Kuwait Motor Town? Surely there are more authoritarian Islamic regimes that want to join in? Just call Mr. Tilke to design a track that can host a night race. It'll cost only half a billion, so it's basically free. That's like spare change for the oil sheiks. :slaphead:

You can't eat your cake, and have it too. These countries got rich thanks to the world's absolute hunger for fossil fuels, and we're watching the pinnacle sport representing that industry (and car culture and petrol etc...)

If anything, it's a very logical and expected switch for the sport, from an energy-transitioning Europe, to where oil and gas is still king. Our problem accepting it is due to living in the past and sniffing nostalgia for breakfast.

I thought the general idea when they announced Mugello was "cool, Mugello, beautiful track, beautiful surroundings, lots of fast corners, it goes up and down. I´m not sure if it will be good for F1 but I can´t wait to see!".
When Qatar is "ugh, another sandbox, narrow track, looks like 75% of the other circuits, we don´t need this".

Wow, you're right. I was pretty sure that Massa had some wins in his last years in Ferrari, but no. His last win was this race where he lost championship to Hamilton :tumble: More to that, between 2009 and 2013 in Ferrari, he only had 3 podium finishes.

In 2009 the Ferrari was terrible, and then he had his accident in Hungary and was never the same again. Plus, when he was leading, he had to let Alonso past

From 2010-13 when he was parented with Alonso he actually had 8 not 3.....Alonso had 41 though. Ouch.

Gee they really have turned that second seat into a joke haven't they.

They need to really have a good look at themselves. It is more than Oh Max is just soo good. When you have multiple drivers over multiple seasons including one with a decade of experience having the same issues (and not even factoring in Ricciardo's end of 2018), you really need to look at the why and how this is happening.

We don't really see what goes on in the background, but I can't imagine Red Bull have done a McLaren to Ricciardo and done absolutely everything the can to get him up to speed. Maybe they have? But I doubt it. I feel that the problem is the one eye monster lurking in the background all the time.

The new F1 Sprint, a short Saturday race that sets the grid for Sunday's showpiece Grand Prix, has been trialled at two 2021 events so far - on incident-filled weekends at Silverstone and Monza - while another is planned for Brazil.

According to Domenicali, the success of those three-day weekends has led to F1 planning to use the format much more in 2022, possibly at seven or eight rounds.

By the only metric that Liberty cares about (Americans watching on Saturday), it has been a success.

By my metrics of a non-american, hardcore fan of F1 since 25+ years, they were a success.

Silverstone's sprint was a huge setup for the most controversial incident of the year between Lewis and Max.

Monza's sprint was a setup for McLaren incrementally getting the final win on Sunday.

Each race also had relatively big names crash out of contention (Perez/Gasly), which is probably a cheap thrill that should never happen in a motor race.

The 8 year old in me thinks 2 chances per weekend of a Spa 98 chaos is better than just 1

The start is the best part of any race, so I guess 2 starts per weekend are better than 1, even if everyone goes into conservation mode in the sprint immediately after the first lap

Plus you know, 2 chances at a wet race....(we may have had a bit of a race at Spa had it took place on the saturday vs no race on the sunday too...)

It actually shows what a baloney this was from the very start. This whole trial to see if it catches on was totally fake, they wanted to ham it up from the get go no matter what fans or drivers say. The quote "promotors are super happy" exposes it straight away. Who is Domenicalli trying to fool with "incredible success" comments? These gimmicks are truly riding on my nerves. 1/3 of races in 2022 then it probably goes up to 1/2 in 2023, 2/3 in 2024 and 3/4 in 2025. I can literally see it coming. I was so fed up with Bernie for years but Liberty is truly something else. I'm sick of these morons twice as fast already.

I am yet to see evidence that the sprint race is hated by fans or by drivers or by teams. All I hear is confirmation bias from people who interpret any piece of news as evidence that they were right, even if it contradicts their view. It's batshit insane to hold this line of thinking, it would be laughable if it was just about F1, but we sadlt see more and more of this insanity in more serious matters in life.

Sometimes, the march of the world goes against our individual wishes and opinions. Dealing with it by burying oneself in denial of reality doesn't help anyone.

Here, I'm doing your job for you.

The opinion of the same team principal, Wolff,
about sprint races, from before the season and after the two races.

https://www.racefans.net/2021/03/03/dtm ... ces-wolff/

https://www.google.com/amp/s/jalopnik.c ... 688457/amp

Went from enthusiastic and convinced, to critical and mixed after Monza.

Is he shooting down the whole fucking idea? No, picking the little tweaks that need to change to improve it, and still waiting for Interlagos to make up his mind. That's nuance and open-mindedness for you.

But go ahead, feel free to shop around with those links and just quote the "waste of time" bit and ignore the rest.

Well, Sergio Perez called it flat out boring. What more evidence do you need? The bottom line is the sprint races are not meant to spice excitement, they are to provide more income to the promotors who can now milk cash from Friday track action where standard qualifying is more important than free practice runs. The sprint quals were only introduced to appease the promotors, I think it's quite clear now.

Everything new doesn't have to be better by default. Check out the UEFA Super League being shot down and the biennial World Cup heading the same way despite Arsene Wenger's crazy ideas. That change of reality is set to fail since UEFA even pulled the gender equality card already (like biennial WC will overshadow the Olympic tournament which is more important for women)
